It's weird how 'USAnians' possess so many guns on their houses...I barely I've seen one but there even you can go to market and buy them :s (I remembered that Moore's documental about it).
About socialism, here on Chile it doesn't work, but that's not a reason to tag it as a failed system and I don't see serious problems with the political model itself, the problem comes with the way governments use it. Here it's chaotic, but at least on Sweden seems to work.

It can be challenging here, but I get by.
And, obviously, not all US Americans have guns, nor are infatuated with them. I don't have one, and probably never will - no need. None of my family ever used guns growing up, and I wasn't raised with them. We didn't hunt, we didn't do recreational shooting, and we didn't feel the need to own them for self defense. And only a couple of my friends even own one.
However, I do live down the street from a discount gun shop, so guns are definitely around.
Obama's not going to take your guns, he's not going to turn the US into a Communistic despot, and California isn't the root of all evil. Just chill.

I have had problems here with things like assaults, but Costa Rica is a very special case in Latin America. We're under-developed (very hehe), but we're a lot better off than say Nicaragua, which is why a lot of Nicaraguans illegally come here (no control whatsoever at the frontier). Immigrants, along with increasing poverty, more guns and lack of gun control, plus the government not doing anything at all (as usual) and not passing new lawa concerning security, have made CR a lot more unsafe than it was 8 years ago. And all of this happened in a matter of 4 years, things are getting out of control here, the future looks grim for CR unless something is not done IMO.
Michelle Bachelet was here a few days ago, she actually instructed the deputies (congressmen) how to pass laws in a more efficient manner *plop* (inside joke to Allfader

I'm not sure what the problem people have with gay marriage is. Maybe some religious folks think its a mockery of what they consider a traditionally Christian institution. But no matter what your beliefs are, you have to give people space. Or else, as you can see from the last few posts, divisions escalate, creating a LESS perfect union.
I am very pro gun-rights though. Its the last line of defense, and it sure has saved my ass. Take away the right for law abiding citizens to own guns, and the only ones with guns are the criminals. Government can never control the black market....and "I've never needed a gun so you shouldn't need a gun" is the most selfish and downright retarded thing I've heard since President Bush.

First... Obama ain't taking your guns. He didn't mention the NRA or gun control once the entire election because people like Obama don't have any deep philosophical opposition or attachment to firearms. If you need a firearm to protect yourself in your neighborhood, then as far as the government is concerned your weapon is the least of their problems. If you eliminate the need for guns... well, then less people have them. Obama's Pennsylvania gaffe is pretty much indicative of his attitude in this regard... yeah, people have guns and are attached to them, but you gotta understand where they're coming from. Dunno what else you want from a Democratic president; he doesn't give a fuck about your firearm, so long as you follow whatever state and federal laws in using it (and he's not about to make guns an issue when he didn't mention them once his entire campaign, so don't expect those laws to change).
Second, Bush made the government bigger and more expensive than any president since FDR. If Obama argues that he wants to make the government more efficient and reduce military spending (the Iraq war being the single most expensive policy item that produces a net negative political and economic result), then you should surmise he's not about to give you more government. Universal health care is far less intrusive in our lives than Homeland Security and the Iraq war bleeding the national budget. It's not even fucking universal health care, it's literally safety net health care for those who can't afford it. If your employer gives you health care, like me, you still keep it.
What's funny is that you generalize people who work at universities as campus liberals, then criticize people for not understanding what it's like to live your life and live in your neighborhood. Works both ways, you know? I live in New York and study / teach on a university campus, voted for Obama, yet I don't want to take your guns, have a good opinion of southerners, and was among the people who applauded Obama for going after places like North Carolina and Virginia because, hey, white southerners are alright people and will vote for the better candidate if he makes his case to them.
I don't blame you for thinking the cats up in the blue states are out to get you, though, with our black, socialist, muslim president. Because that's what morons like Sarah Palin told you, but it's ok. Obama is a half-white, half-black Protestant liberal democrat who taught at the University of Chicago (the bastion of free market capitalism, where I went for college while he taught there). So it'll be ok, I promise!
