I just bought Blackwater Park yesterday, and so far, I like it a lot. I could do without the growling, but for the most part it's really good.
Which album should I get next?

Also, why in the hell is there a Debbie Gibson smilie here?!?

The growling rules damnit. You'll get used to it, then love it :).

Anyways, it's a safe bet for you to check out "Still Life" and "My Arms Your Hearse" since they are really similar to BWP. I worship "Morningrise" and "Orchid" as well, but those are a bit different in style..

Concerning the growling, if you try to see it as using one more instrument at the same time as conveying the lyrics, then you might appreciate it more
Just listen to all that feeling behind it... rrrooooooaarrrrr

I can understand where your coming from with the growling if your really not used to that style. But it's like forlorn soul said "you'll get used to it"

Mikael is the only singer that I'm aware of at the moment that can growl like a freakin demon and then sing in the most beautiful voice. What's really cool is the fact that you can actually tell what he's saying during the growling and raging. Whereas most of the guys doing it are one dimensional and all it sounds like is "Grrrrrraarrr" the whole time (which some people enjoy - myself included).

Bottom line - Mikael is the shit, there is no one better!

You can't go wrong with Still Life or My Arms Your Hearse. Still Life is still my personal favorite after listening to it about a million times over the last year. Good luck finding Still Life though, you'll probably have to mailorder or ebay unless there is a record shop in your area that really has their shit together.

If you haven't already thought of it, listen to BWP on the headphones if you have a pair.

Enjoy!

I've not seen ONE Opeth release in any of the stores I've looked at here in Georgia. There's some big stores too... best buy, media play and such...

Nothing.

I feel terrible, because I got the last 3 Opeth CDs as burned copies of a friend of mine. I really like this band, and wanna support them, but mail-order costs too much....

I DID pay to see them in concert however! I guess that counts for something.... and I got a GREAT show to boot!

As soon as their CD's turn up in the local stores, I'll be buying them all.

if anyone needs help getting any releases...we (near chicago) have a metal cd store where i can get them and perhaps mail them back to you....does anyone know where i can browse for opeth shirts? i have a morningrise one..but im dying for a BWP one...thanks so much!....=)

You'll probably get used to the growling. A few years ago I couldn't stand to listen to hardly any bands with death metal vocals. Now I love 'em. They add so much character to the atmosphere of the music. Now probably 75% of the stuff I listen to contains at least some growling. If you absolutely can't get used to them, then you'll probably never like Orchid or Morningrise(even though they are my 2 Opeth faves). I think the growling stands out more in the mix on those 2 albums. Like mentioned before, you should probably buy the albums in reverse chronological order.
