Hows come when you're in a rut, it's so hard to get out of said rut........

I don't think it's your thoughts/words that determine what you do with your life, but your actions. If your thoughts/words affect your actions, then yes. You can decide not to do anything with your life and then not do anything to try and change your situation and be stuck forever. Or you can make your mind up to do something different and make positive changes in your life and then do them. An example of the difference between your thoughts and actions would be that you could have a great-paying job that will get you out of debt and closer to getting what you want, but hate every minute of it and can't wait until you don't need said job anymore. Or you could have every intention of improving your life but never get off your ass to do so. So I think the two (thoughts and actions) can be related, but aren't necessarily so every time. But I don't believe if you convince yourself you're going to win the lottery that you're actually going to.

Does that help?

Good answer. I have a sister who is always telling me how well she is gonna do one of these days, and how proud I'll be. Well, that is all fine, but she has been telling me this for over a decade. I also have a sister who has done well, but she is a bitch half the time. Now, if you mix the two together, you'd have a positive go-getter (or a lazy ass pessimist). I think if you work hard, and keep a smile on you face, you'll do well.........

Yes.
It's what you do. Not what you think or say.
And the optimistic go-getter will have better luck than the pessimistic go-getter (who expects the worst).
If things that you cannot control don't work out, that's when you can say, "Fuck It!"
At least you tried....
