I have a problem.

Maybe they will continue with the stuff they made with damnation.... ? who knows if they gonna break up soon or if they las for many years...?

Why the hell would you hope that? Even if everything they made after it sucked (which I doubt it will), it's not like you'd have to buy it or listen to it. Then again, you'd have to sit through the new songs in shows. Still, that's the only way I can see them staying together as a possible bad thing.

yeah man, i was just joking...opeth is one of my favourite bands but, as you said, i'm worried about the future releases...i like bands that make different albuns and sometimes i think opeth is making the same stuff always and sometimes i don't think so...certainly damnation will be different...my fear is: what will come next? another heavy album that mixes heavy parts with acoustics, clean vox (sometimes with radio sound) with growls, some piano here and there? i know it's opeth's style which i like, but i fear to lose my interest...:(

I don't remember which magazine it was, but Mike was interviewed, and based on what I read and recall this Damnation album was a tough decision for him/them to decide to release as an Opeth album. He didn't even see it as an Opeth album. I don't see this being a Sign of Things to Come. They just had a shit load of material. My impression was not that they're heading in a different direction, but they're just experimenting. There's no purpose behind it. It's not like they're testing the waters by releasing Deliverance (which is a bit heavy) to gauge the public's response, and then by releasing Damnation and seeing which album gets a better reaction so that they can decide which direction to go. Is anyone here a songwriter? And I mean, do you write stuff that means the world to YOU? Like me. I don't care what people like. I write what I'm feeling. Mike doesn't give a shit about the public's opinion surely. He'll do whatever he wants. And if people don't like it, that's their loss.

Man - what a bunch of pessimists.

I've enjoyed them since I discovered them in April, 2001, around the release of BWP. I listened backwards to their older stuff, and really enjoyed all of their music. But since I was introduced by their 5th release, it has been my favorite. I look back, and feel Opeth have progressed quite nicely. And Deliverance was yet another step into progression.

With all the buzz about Damnation, I am quite excited for the release. And this time, I will not download any tracks before the actual release. I had Deliverence when it first leaked. This time, I want to try the "wait until the REAL release" to see what I like better - getting it early, or running to the store (or order on the internet), and wait to get the real CD in my hands. I'll frantically unwrap the plastic, and then pick at the edge seal to pull it off. Then I'll open the jewel case, hoping this time that the little pieces that make up the holder of the CD didn't break. I hate getting a new CD with a cracked jewel case, but even more I hate it when the CD is loose inside because the plastic the CD is snapped onto broke.

Then, I'll crank up my stereo (and it's a decent one), and sit down, and listen to the CD in its entirety. I'll probably have a tall glass of soda and some snack, and enjoy an hour of brand spanking new Opeth.

Man - what a bunch of pessimists.

Ya know, I used to really like Fear Factory...

And then they put out Digimortal, which has only about 2 or 3 good songs on it, even though they still sound like Korn Riffs, and the drums are so obviously programmed that you just ask yourself "What happened to this band that I liked?"

It's hard to judge the tension within a band and whatnot. I'm assuming there are alot of factors in Opeth that we aren't aware of (maybe Peter took Martin's sock and vomitted on it after a night out and Martin never forgave him :p). Seriously though, judging by past bands, they will break up when you least expect it.. they may say 'we'll go on forever, I can see us going on' but when the tension in a band gets too high they eventually need to call it quits.

I dread the day and hope it doesn't happen for a while to come in Opeth's case...
