I wouldn't always say that. Some musicians did their best work while overloaded with pain, sorrow, self-loathing and addictions, whereas I would personally say a lot of my worst was done in negative states of mind.
Some artists THRIVE on mental clarity, some thrive on having very little, if any clarity. From what I can tell, it seems Trent feels he is making some of the best music of his career while sober, but I'm hard pressed to find anyone taht would agree with him.
