I know nothing about cabs

The framus is decently built but nothing like a boogie and weighs about half of one, however it is a GOOD solution if you want decent build quality and V30's. Sounds good too, all my stuff has been done with a Framus Dragon but those arent the best representations so far :p

I think you guys over looked what main amps he'll be using.

I know metaltastic gets off on v30's but they sound like shit with the wrong amps.

Hmm, two awesome tones are immediately coming to mind that are Marshall JVM through a Mesa OS cab w/ V30s - the rhythms on Opeth's "Watershed" and our own Felix Neumann's stuff (check out www.mypsace.com/actofrage, the first song that should play is "Gunman's Poem," which IMO has such an awesome organic crunch). I'm not disputing that 75's *can* sound good, but from all I've heard (I've never mic'ed one up), I prefer V30s, as do the majority of modern metal engineers and speaker cabinet makers :)

Meh, my laney sounds fine through V30's. I haven't tried it with a Marshall with greenbacks or w/e so I may later come back and eat my words

My harley benton 2x12 shits all over my non vintage 30 laney 4x12. They can't be beat for the price IMHO.

Joe

is that suggesting a harley benton with V30's in it? I cant find that as stock anywhere so i'm guessing if you do have them you put them in yourself

I'm mainly using a Ashdown Fallen Angel 60, very warm sounding, lots of bass, but a bit sloppy at times. From my experience having heard stuff done with them V30's are pretty tight sounding which would be perfect

EDIT: ok yeah i found the harley benton with V30's, sorry

ok just to put these in context for people in the states and elsewhere, i can get a marshall 1960 for under £400, framus 4x12s are £500 cheapest, harley benton with V30s for £289, randall XL for about £600, an avatar 4x12 + shipping for about £500

The 1960 is probably not the "vintage" version with V30s though...I have heard Avatars are good, but personally I'd rather have the Randall, though I guess 100 quid difference is a pretty big deal (if it were $100 US, I'd totally say go for it)

well apparently marshall don't sell any cabs with V30's in anymore. I'm tempted by the harley benton if people think it's up to anything, seeing as the cab is pretty much only costing me £90 on top of the £200+ for 4 V30s. What would you say is the tonal character of the Randall?

Well tonally I'd imagine they'd all be pretty similar, since they're all similar spec-wise; if anything, though, I'd imagine the Randall would be a bit fuller/beefier because it's a heavier cab from the thicker and better wood. But since it's more than twice the price of the HB, I don't think there's a contest, go for the HB!

I vote angled, for the reasons I mentioned when discussing this with Guitarhack on the first page - if you're not gonna be playing it live very often (or at all) though, straight.

All things going well, Moonlapse and myself will be doing a shootout/comparo at a studio between the Angled and Straight Mesa OS this weekend. Will keep you all posted of the results if we pull it together. :err:

BADASS dude, looking forward to it! Make sure to do the bottom speakers as well on the angled! :)

Sorry to dredge this one up again guys, especially if I'm beating a dead horse, but the "Vintage 30s" in the Marshall 1960AV and 1960AB aren't actually Vintage 30s if I'm not mistaken; they're some special Marshall-Celestion specialty speaker that is a 70 watt variation on the V30 we all know and love.

But, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
