I play and program/compose drums pretty wickedly - any money in it?

I've got talent. I've got some gear. I've got spare time. I want some extra money... not heaps, just want to be constructive and for it to be worth my while.

What should I do? what would you do?

I'm not a business minded person... only enough to know there must be some kind of demand for what I can do. I've no idea how to set up or exactly what type of operation I should get going. Just vague ideas bouncing around.

Any input appreciated folks. :)

session drummers are always cool to have around man, there's always a market for this type of thing. ive been thinking about getting a session drummer for some stuff at some point in the future, so who knows, maybe if i dig your style ill hit you up

Being in Melbourne makes it a tough gig, so first thing you should do is make sure you're set up well to be able to work with people online, ie, decent net connection, a place where you can upload all your project files at the end.
Make it as easy for your clients as possible.

I cannot stress this enough. There's nothing worse than working with someone who's difficult to work with. Be reliable, be honest, admit mistakes when you make them and just be nice (SO many people forget about that)

create resume/samples... create myspace page or other site to display your abilities... post on forums such as this one (in the proper sub forum) and hope that people want the services you offer...

Start cheap. Increase your rates as the market sees fit.

Rock out. :headbang:

Stating cheap also has the possibility of working against you in the end.
I'd say definitely not start out cheap. Fair and moderate prices at first, but don't sell yourself short and give cheap quites

Please post samples of your work. I might be interested in the future. My band is probally going to kick our drummer out.

Thanks for your thoughts and interest.

I have a pretty dormant myspace http://www.myspace.com/silentjudgementmusic it wasn't set up for the intentions I'm thinking about now, more just a musical project thingy that really wasn't/isn't ready.
Please be clear, the track 'random demo 05' is the only real drumming, and it was done on a 4 track in a garage with 2 mics.
The rest is programmed by me.

I'm just setting up a dropbox atm, maybe i'll do up a thread with some stuff in appropriate sub-forum.

I'm not super duper awesome playing wise, I have some strengths and my own sort style I think. I would say I kick ass in my comfort zone, but my comfort zone isn't expansive, especially tempo wise. But can make anything happen one way or another.

Question: do you think going all electric and collaborating/working by all by midi, whether performed or programmed is feasible.. or a good idea?
For myself, at the moment I've got my drums triggered into d4, and just recording the midi, ultimately triggering slate drums with my overheads for cymbals. To be honest I wish I just had a full badass electric kit just for ease of editing my performance.
Service wise, could do however many takes and upload them in a minute. quantized and unquantized versions..

Hey Ben, that song Insaniac is bad ass, the drum programming sounds great. I work with a lot of metal bands. How much would you charge for programming a whole song? How long will it take you? If I used you would you be able to give me the programmed drums on seperate tracks? Like kick, snare, hi hat, ride ect...

Those drum parts sound pretty cool. Working totally with triggers and midi would be good for customers at a lower price range.

A completely accoustic drum recording would be way better, but your cost of equipment would increase greatly and thus the price you charge your customers. A all accoustic recording would also require more skill at engineering.

Hey man, thanks. I'm thinking maybe $30 a song to start with. Im not sure. It doesn't take me long, a few hours. It's pretty easy to separate kick snare etc.. don't see why i couldn't do that.
