o_O OK, so this is my (counts on fingers) 6th time quitting, but I have gone further this time than all those previous attempts! OK, so its only my 5th day since I quit, but dammit, its a record. Any one else in here ever do it? I am having some weird withdrawl effects, some I expected, some I didn't. I knew I would have some psychotic episodes (half of my tools have been airborn this week), and I knew I would have a general wierd feeling. But what I didn't expect was dizzyness, and a loss of co-ordination. Very strange. Its like a beer buzz without the beer. You would think that would be a good thing, but it gets annoying after a few days.......... o_O

I used to smoke for quite a while myself, but when I was on a pack of Lucky Strikes a day I was beginning to wonder where this would lead me and these thoughts made me stop. Just like you I had to endure quite a lot of withdrawal symptons like massive sweating especially at night while sleeping, extreme nervousness, my hands were shaking which is perhaps what you mean with "lack of co-ordination", but this is all just temporary.

What is probably worse is the extreme hunger for a cigarette you might have to endure every now and then and that for years! Personally, I haven't smoked for years now, but sometimes there are moments where I still develop such a craving hunger for a cigarette that is very, very powerfull. Fortunately these nicotine attacks or whatever you want to call them are not very long lasting and sometimes they only last for a few seconds which makes them bearable.

I just hope I didn't scare you there, but why quitting smoking is one of the hardest things to do. It IS worth it though. As an ex-smoker I can assure you of that! :)

Congrats to both of you for kicking the habit! Hang in there Bestwestranger! That's some harsh shit you're body is withdrawling from! I think that it would be much harder to deal with the things you may feel someday from NOT quitting than the things you are experiencing today from stopping. Keep it up! ;)

Thanks guys! It is hard, but it gets a little easier every day. I haven't had the shakes, and by loss of co-ordination, I mean literally. I actually walked into two doors this week because my hand didn't open them fast enough! LOL! I also have been dropping things, and my guitar playing sucks more than ever.....but it does seem to be going away. I still smoke 1 cig a day, but it takes me all day to do it. I gave the gum up after I kept getting hiccups and an upset stomach. I think this weekend I will give up that last one and be done for good! Or at least untill I start again! LOL.....

Leme relate a story about the best way to quit..

Keep in mind, I started smokeing at age 10... I quit when I was 15, and here is how, very lucky, mind you. Was up to about a pack every two days at that point.

Just finished smokeing a cig, when out of NOWHERE I got the flu, and puked my guts out..say 3 minutes after smokeing. It was terrible, and ya know what, I managed to match the two experiances together. Since then I've maybe smoked 2 cigs... so.. get some ipicac, chug it after that smoke, and puke your way to freedom! Muahaha.

Say Bestwestranger, I have a relative that is doing the patch thing. It's really working. It kills the crave. However, must remove patch before sleeping cuz you get nasty nightmares from it. Then of course remember to put it on after getting up. I have another relative that just dropped dead at age 62, chain smoker. I have another relative that "was" a chain smoker, but now drags around an O2 tank everywhere because is 100% dependent on it. Not the life I want to live nor I doubt anybody else. You're doing the right thing, keep with it!

Then we see guys like good ole Dino Martin, smoking away till their 80s with no apparent illnesses. Weird how it can affect some and not others.

The same goes for Churchill. He used to smoke big fat cigars and the way he looked he had nothing against a good meal either, but it seems as if he was able to handle it healthwise. Problem is, you can't tell it in advance whether you will be lucky or not and the chances for a smoker to die of cancer are much higher then the risk of a non smoker.

That's gotta be tough! Man, being around smokers when you are not one yourself is sheer misery!!!! Wish I could give you some advice........... I'm sure you've already tried talking to them about it, ya? Tell them how it will prematurely wrinkle their skin and make them look old and haggard before their time.........I don't know!!! I'm sure they've already heard the "how bad it is for your health" and "cancer risks" speaches many time by now. Good luck.

<------old and haggard looking.....lol! Well, to confess something, I am back to smoking again (sigh). It seems every time I decide to quit something comes up and takes priority. When I said before that I tend to have psychotic episodes from the withdrawls, I really seriously meant it. Seeing as how some of my time is spent dealing face to face with customers, it was extremely hard not to reach across the counter and slap some of the unruly ones! I also was having a really hard time concentrating on things, which is not good when I have a very well paying, brain straining, important project to do (it could mean new career opportunities if I get it right!). So, when my vacation rolls around I plan to try again, when all I will have to do is sit around and take it easy.

Something I have never understood, considering I have been smoking for 14 years, is I have never liked 2nd hand smoke. I can't stand it. Ever worked somewhere where there is an indoor smoking room? Its one of the nastiest places on earth. And, I absolutly can't fathom how people can smoke in a car with the windows up. Even when I was living in Kansas and it was 2 below outside and I was flying down the freeway going 75 mph, that window was down if I lit one up.

mannnn i havent smoked since march 31st ,,, but after reading this thread.. i think im gonna start tomorow !!!! ..... da*** that was hard to read... its too bad i wasent here earlier to tell best... when you have a craving.. dont smoke cigs... smoke cigars instead dude !!!... dont inhale, just let the nicotine absorb in your tongue, and you urge is almost quenched ...... and rule #2 i guess helped me...you cannot quit unless your PROUD of quitting!!... i was soo happy that i went a week without smoking, and that proudness helps !!!! gl for your next attempt dude. cheers

Congrats on your quitting!

I tried the cigar thing once, it didn't work. Still had real bad cravings, although it was the only thing I smoked for two weeks. I was really happy this time because I thought I was really going to make it through. It is still the longest I have gone without them, and I think that is something. Not much, lol, but something.
