i think i am burning myself out

i'm getting to a point where i am listening to music during a lot of my free time, whether it is reviewing promos or listening to stuff from my own massive collection, most of it being... well you all know what i listen to. if i keep going at this rate, i'm going to be burned out on this kind of music (black/heathen/whatever metal) and some of it is becoming somewhat bland to me. ugh... this stuff happens when you are constantly listening to this music. i think i am going to take a break from the extreme stuff and come back to it in a few days... anyone else experience this sort of thing???

Absolutely, but this normally happens when I concentrate too much on the really extreme end of things. That's why I think it's important to have some variety in your collection so you can choose different stuff. Also, your (anyone's) reviews always turn out better when they don't feel so saturated by what they listen to.

Quite honestly, I'm mixing it up these days. I'd completely forgotten how much I loved Anathema's Serenades, of course Aeternus and a certain Empyrium album are getting a few spins because I want to review them both, and I've even got some good old fashioned power metal going with the new Power Quest CD (where I'm going to do a follow up interview with Steve from PQ).

Next up - some early King Diamond...."Grandmaaaa!".

Speaking of which, I got some more promos in today so I'll send out an e-mail. But besides that, I now have Danzig IV and Grip Inc in my possession (thanks NAD). And I even have a demo from a certain Russell....

I don't have a problem with getting sick of a certain type of music, or even a band, and both definitely happen. For example my favorite band is Tool right, but I think I've listened to Lateralus once and ÆNIMA twice in the past 2 years. No big deal, you just get tired of stuff after awhile. Doesn't last forever normally, but if it does, so be it.

Enjoy those two albums JayKeeley, I know you'll love the Grip Inc. and hope you'll love the Danzig. You and I should sell our Russell demos on eBay when he gets big and famous. :)

Let me know what you think when you get round to listening to it  Sorry about the singing again :p

LOL @ NAD, yeah, like that'll ever happen :)

Once I listened to ONLY jazz for about a year and a half. Seriously. It was several years ago, and it seemed that I had heard every metal band I could possibly find.

Now: I mix it up with stuff like new Swans, jazz, Buckethead, and a large variety of metal. I never get tired of the REAL extreme stuff, though. I'm not a pussy.

I burnt myself out on metal and hardly listened to any for a few years (maybe around 94-96). It helps to listen to all kinds of stuff (genres beyond metal), which I didn't do as much before the burnout, and I definitely do now.

Thing is, it didn't help with 'mainstream' metal turning to shit then as well. I don't think I even had access to the Internet in '94 so gaining access to underground forums etc was impossible. Before the web, how were people finding out about bands like Opeth, Emperor, and In Flames? Even Kerrang turned its back on the scene so it wasn't through off-the-shelf magazines, right?

If I remember right, all we had were HMV selling the worst that Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Maiden had to offer, and so it was inevitable that people walked away. I certainly did, thinking that bands like Soundgarden and Oasis were about as good as the 'alternative' scene was going to get. Ugh.

I loved the mid-90s for death metal, it's when I discovered Cannibal Corpse, Carcass, At the Gates, etc.

I remember buying Napalm Death - Fear, Emptiness, Despair when it first came out and the production was so bad I took it back to the store thinking there was something wrong with the CD!

You knew of At the Gates in the mid-90s? That's cool. Cannibal Corpse and Carcass I can understand, but I figured ATG were still pretty much deeper underground before SotS came out. In any case, how were you finding out about new underground bands from Europe and such?

Magazines, Headbanger's Ball, and just buying random shit that looked cool at the local music store that catered to lesser known crap.

Guitar School put together a list of best metal ever (or something) and Slaughter of the Soul was high up on their list so I picked it up. Even saw At the Gates live back then too, OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG they were so good. Dissection, At the Gates, and then Morbid Angel with David Vincent all in one night, that ruled.
