i think my 5150 is dying

I do agree with the probability of a tube issue, but try my contact cleaner suggestions first. The 5150 series has a minor oxidation problem with the jacks, and you might get lucky and save some cash.

Edit: I know this happens to other amps too, but it seems to happen to 5150s often... Does anybody know why? Cheap parts?

What The Broodwich said...

You guys, look at the post below, it's his Mesa cab that's fucked, not his 5150.

here is the goodnews......the 5150 is perfect.

the horrible news.......ITS THE MESA -cryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy-

Yeah mine is starting to have this issue, if I put a cable into the jacks this problem disappears
built like a tank.... I don't think is built like a tank anymore, sorry peavey.

I don't know if it's oxidation, but I've always read that the contacts on the jacks in the 5150 get "gunked up"...I've heard it's from static electricity fom the circuit or whatever, but it attracts dirt, dust, etc. As that stuff builds up on the contacts, it creates problems because it can create a sort of bridge or "arc" (for lack of a better word) that can mess with the amp's tone/output. Running a cable in and out of the jacks knocks off the build-up, or spreads the contacts apart enough (since a cable is inserted) that the issue disappears.

Have you tried using the other cab inputs to check its the input jack for that impedance?

Yeah but it's strange that this just happens some year after the amp is out of the factory and not as soon as "you buy it".
I guess it's really oxidation or some other shit that just gets "rotten" lol ;)

Sorry, missed the post saying it's the cab...CRAPPY!!
I'm sure you did a quick trouble shoot...all the speakers working and tightly secured? Impedence matched correctly? Wiring/soldering/speaker cable all solid?
Damn, what else could it be?

As for the 5150/dirty contact speculation...all the theories you guys have posted seem valid. My 5150 has done it in the past, and now I'm pre-emptive and clean it regularly with no issues for years, but man, why only my 5150?
Since the fix is easy and seemingly complete, I've never bothered to strip out the jacks for inspection...

Well, the build up of the gunk DOES take time, so I don't see how it would happen soon after purchasing.

I've had my 6505+ for almost 4 years and I've never had to do a thing to the jacks and they've rarely, maybe twice, been used.

Just cleaned mine out as per your suggestion & suddenly the top end de-fizzed & the whole thing sounds great. Then again, mine's from the early 90's and probably really, really needed it.

Thanks!! :kickass:

i took it to my friends shop they use contact cleaner on everything all the tubes etc etc.

diagnoses, mesa cab blew 2 v30s fuck my life

That's really weird man, I mean, you have to play those at insanely loud volume to blow them. I have an early 90's Mesa cab that has been giged to hell and is still good.
