never mind the music and the sloppy playing.

Pretty much, got some home recordings to do and im just trying to get the guitar tones sorted out before we start the drums and what not so i recorded this little sample to get some feedback. I am pretty new to this so its prooving to be a very slow moving task.

I used a HD147, direct out, to mackie CFX12 into Cubase (i know, not the grandest of set ups, but its all we have). 4 tracks, R, L, 80R, 80L.

i have already done some EQ tweaking and added a C4, but the tone is still really gritty and lacks a bit of balls. What do you think would be the best course of action to make it generally better. Or will the drums and bass, once added, solve these problems for me?
thanks

It has to sound good out of the H147. Any further tweaking should be intened to make a good basic sound to fit in the mix, not make a poor tone sound good.
So how's the basic tone?
Set the amp correctly to begin with.

believe me, not many things sound good out of the HD147... i love it live, but its being a nightmare to record.

the tone is just harsh and a bit thin.

ill mess about with the eq some more see if taking away some of the 3k will help it..

Then use something else... There's a golden rule in recording/mixing audio:
Don't try to polish a turd. :)

haha, so guys, i took your golden rule and ditched the HD.

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=564447

there is a recording of my band i did on that page, i think its sounding 'o.k.' for what experience and gear i have but do you guys have any critisisms with your better monitors and what not? the site seems to have degraged the quality alot, and obviously mp3 compression hasnt helped, but i still think it sounds reasonably ok.

(by the way, i must say, i dont post here often, but i read the threads here almost religiously and the information, tips and techniques i have learnt here have become absoloutly invaluable, so heres a thanks to everyone)

i think there is something wrong with the vocals, they dont really sit 'in' the mix, they are more 'on top', but i dont know how to fix this?

I like it! sounds like diy metalcore which I like the guitars could be a bit tighter!
I think the vocals sit good in the mix but the guitars a bit on top... but hey I'm no AE...

Guitar tone needs more mids and a bit less highs. Theres no power to them. Turn the mids up a little bit on your amp. Less gain wouldn't go a miss either, less is more.
Btw, playing it tighter will automatically make it sound better aswell, as you will get the power from everything striking in at once.

Hope this is helpful :)

i'm really really sorry, and it's way OT, but the first thing i saw this morning was this:

not meant as an offense, just curious ;)

don't follow every hype!!

:headbang:

thanks for the help. yea, ill try and bass it out some, maybe raise the actual bass level to compensate for the trebly guitars.

when i get home ill write out what i did with the vocals for you xmarcelx, but pretty much basics are: 2 vocal tracks, 1 0db, 1 -10db, both panned left 10, into a vocal group channel with some eqing and compression, but ill write that out later when i get home. Shure Beta 58a mic, into mackie cfx12 mixer for the pre, into laptop microphone input.

its my first attempt at recording a band and i appreciate the help!

as far as how we look is concerned... at the end of the day, band aesthetics shouldnt determine listening tastes. it is naive to think that it is sheer coincidence most 'metal' bands have long hair; almost all bands, regardless of genre do have and follow a certain 'look'. but why arent they mocked? the worst part is the sheer ignorance concerning 'emo', i feel bad for all the guys who listened ot the old east coast emo who are now being thrown in with all these new bands like My Chemical Romance and what ever who arent actually 'emo', who have just been labled such by crappy publications. the word you should instead be using is 'scene', if anything, we look 'scene', but i think as far as my band goes, we all look and dress fairly neutral, partially in effort to aviod this kind of attention and partially because this is how we WANT to look. like im sure how all moshers 'want' to have long girl-esque hair, but you dont see me pointing and laughing at all your bands.

at the end of the day, would we be 'more' metal if we grew our hair past our shoulders and wore baggy jeans? if you answer yes, then thats just poor.

(i dont like emo music, fake or real. just taking the mick out of the cuture linked with a certain music genre is both hypicrital and contradictory, and to be quite honest, you have to wonder who REALLY cares more about looks, the metal kids, or the 'emo' (SCENE) kids).

sorry if i appeared overly sensitive about that, but it pisses me off so much to think that people might not take our music seriously because of how we look.

It's kind of sad that "emo" refers to these awful bands on MTV that do the sing-scream "I hate my parents. I'm so misunderstood" schtick, when it really should refer to bands like Rites of Spring, Embrace, Moss Icon - even Mohinder, Heroin, Merel, etc. Oh well. I'm done be a snob about "emo" and semantics.

Amen!
Those were the original "emo" bands... good stuff. However, what people consider to be hardcore is not the same nowadays either...

Thx! I just wanted to know if I can record voccals for some demo using just a SM58 (and sure a pre)!
Btw I think using the mic input is not the best idea!

that's what "EMOtional" means ;)

and c'mon "as angels bleed"(do i have to say anything more? ;) ), don't take me too serious, just kidding.

that's the prob with those emo-kids, not every little piss is enough reason to cry.
and i've never met an emo-kid not sayin "i'm not emo, i'm wearing that haircut, 'cause i like it".
THAT is emo ;)
so it seems that every emo-kid has got the exact same taste by accident:cool:

seriously, i don't give a fuck about your look or haircut, don't take me too serious!
just came across that pic after i saw that video, your music is not so bad/emo, so don't take it personal.
and hey, there are loads of people complaining 'bout my look, too, i so don't care,...

at least it's not sad enough to write a song about that....

...sorry, hard for me to stop ;)

have a nice day:kickass:
