"I'm leeeaaaaving, on a jet plane . . . ."

It was written by John Denver, for Peter, Paul and Mary, I believe (one of those hippy groups, anyway).

For reasons I won't go into, I actually have the lyrics stashed away on my personal computer. Here they are - keep those tissues handy!

All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go.
I'm standing here outside your door,
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye.
But the dawn is breaking, it's early morn.
The taxi's waiting, he's blowing his horn,
Already I'm so lonesome I could cry.
So kiss me and smile for me,
Tell me that you'll wait for me,
Hold me like you'll never let me go.
Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go.

There's so many times I've let you down,
So many times I've played around,
I tell you now, they don't mean a thing.
Every place I go, I'll think of you,
Every song I sing, I'll sing for you,
When I come back, I'll bring your wedding ring.

So kiss me and smile for me,
Tell me that you'll wait for me,
Hold me like you'll never let me go.
Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go.

Now the time has come to leave you,
One more time let me kiss you,
Then close your eyes, I'll be on my way.
Dream about the days to come.
When I won't have to leave alone,
About the times I won't have to say

Kiss me and smile for me,
Tell me that you'll wait for me,
Hold me like you'll never let me go.
Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go.

I just realised that not only did John Denver, writer of this song, die in a plane crash, but so did a few members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, the band which Miss Dreamy thought performed this track. Did you think it was Lynyrd Skynyrd as a joke, Dreamy, or were you serious and didn't actually think of the fate of said 70s rockers?

I think the reason I thought it was LS was directly related to the crash actually Spiff. I believe, if my memory serves me correctly, that there is a rather amusing scene in Con Air when all the convicts start singing the song. And I'm sure that LS got mentioned somewhere there too. Hence me putting 2 and 2 together and getting 57. ;)

Thanks for the lyrics too. I'm starting to feel frightfully tearful. Oh, I think theres something in my eye . . .  :D
