Hey, I know theres a big thread on impulses and I've read through it several times but I seem to be missing something very simple here...

Well I've downloaded the impulses and they seem to be just .wav files. Im using my friends mac atm because I'm trying to make a demo cd for uni, but I cant seem to figure out how exactly to use them in logic. I know I'm meant to record the dry signal then use the impulses to shape the sound...but seriously I have no idea how to do that.

If theres any logic users out there who could lend a helping hand for this newb and give me a simple step by step guide I would greatly appreciate it :D

thanks.

Use Space Designer in Logic to load the impulse/wav.

"IR Sample" is where you load them. You also need an amp sim with cab sim off, if it has one.

ah cool. Ive loaded it up now but it still sounds like the dry signal? I assume thats because I dont have an amp sim right? Any suggestions of some good free ones that I could download? I have a POD too...dunno if I can use that for the impulses though

Yep, you need an amp sim. Logic pro 9 has some but not to great for high gain, if that's what you want. There are no good (imo) amp sims that are free for mac. All the goodies go to PC guys.

For PC:

Currently I'm running crossover on mac with reaper to use these PC plugs.

You could also turn the cabs off on your pod, record the signal and apply the impulse with Space Designer.

You may want to look at Revalver http://www.peavey.com/products/revalver/index.cfm

They haven't updated in forever and it seems a new version will soon come out. IMO it's OK but it just sounds like, well, Revalver. Download the demo, it never runs out but you cant save presets and it makes a white noise every few.

Usually I would have just posted some rude picture and told you "search!" but I don't know what came over me.

Edit: By the way, turn "rev" all the way up/on and "dry" all the way off/down in Space Designer's output section to get the "cab" effect.

Well thats what I've been doing, recording with just a preamp on the POD then using the space designer, but all it seems to do is make the dry signal sound slightly better...but no distortion or whatever. Ill look into the revalver if thats the best option but I could easily download reaper on this mac (thats what I use on my pc btw). Does the crossover thing come with reaper or is it something you download seperately?
I really appreciate the help btw, believe me I did search both on here and on google but nothing telling me how to do things in easy steps (baring in mind im new to logic and macs in general confuse me lol)

I don't own a pod so I don't know what you're doing wrong. You should be recording a distorted signal without the cab sim then applying the impulse.

Crossover http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/ cost some money. If you are willing to buy it, do understand that you will have some latency, little but some. I process the signal in reaper then take it back into Logic. See here: http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/equipment/499047-windows-plugins-mac-solution.html

For me it works out good as I'm not overly concerned with getting the best tone on earth. (dam tone nazis) Besides, I'm into doing old school industrial. ;)

there was a free stripped down version of guitar rig 3 on native instruments web site for a bit. I use that if I need a decent high gain amp sim for mac. it has the jmc 800 sim with a tuner and digital delay. not bad for free.

Oooohhh I'm such a moron lol. I thought you had to record a clean signal then the impulse added all the distortion and what not...silly me lol. I just tried it without the cab on the pod and it sounds better, gonna have to do some serious tweaking though. And yeah, anything that costs money is a big no for now seeing as I'm skint lol, if it comes to it ill just record on my pc downstairs then import the audio to the mac to mix/master/etc. And I have no shame in being a tone nazi lol :p Thanks so much for your help man, its really appreciated!

Also cheers beyond dead, ill look into that

One thing that's also very important(and you'd be amazed how many people oversee this), setup Space Designer so that it doesn't send through any dry signal at all, only wet, processed signal. Otherwise you'll get a blend of fizzy preamp signal and proper, processed signal, and it doesn't sound that good.
