In case anyone actually still thought Dream Theater weren't nu-metal...

I don't see anything progressive about it. However, after this "revelation" with Octavarium I noticed that Dream Theater haven't really been progressive since Liquid Tension Experiment.

They defined "prog" metal, and by now I hate them for it.

Your opinion differs from mine! We shall butt heads furiously!!! :heh:

You motherfucker, how dare you counter my opinion with an equally valid one of your own!

I've heard it, btw. It sucks. Dream Theater has made a career out of sucking.

I agree, great musicians but I thought there music was just generic bullshit surounded by amazing solos and drumming.

Pantera is alot more fun ass kicking music. I like pantera when I lift weights or drive.

Dragonforce is the ultimate driving music. With the windows down and the wind blowing in your face.

It just feels like you're on some kind of adventure.

.....and no I'm not on anything.

hahaha, are you driving to save the princess or to fight mythic battles? My favorite song to listen to while driving is Accept-Fast as a Shark.

Symphony X, Nile, and Necrophagist are all examples that come readily to mind about properly balancing uber tech skills with good song writing

Hell yea, After I bought Symphony's live album I had "the grand design" and "of sins and shadows" stuck in my head for 2 weeks. Nile has some of the most ridiculously fast playing I have ever heard, Ive nailed "excration text" on drums but cant get close to track 6 on Annihilation of the Wicked.

Necrophagist and balancing tech and songwriting?

Sorry....I like Necrophagist, but I wouldn't really say that about them (him, I just have the first).

well songwriting in that they aren't just tech and crazy leads for the sake of it(like dream theater or DEP), but they do the neo-classical harmonies and everything is so damn melodic....

You really think so? The guy sweeps every five seconds.

Ok kids, what have we learned about metal image today?

P.S. Barking Pumpkin - Your a moron. If you can't see how DT is progressive, then you either haven't listened to a DT album, or don't know what progressive metal is.

I really don't give a flying fuck what kind of clothes he's wearing. Octavarium is almost completely devoid of any nu-metal bullshit, and easily on par with the band's best work. The title track is probably the most prog thing theyve done.
What he said.

I don't really consider ripping off Muse and various other bands and then rehashing old stuff newly infused with radio rock progressive. Dream Theater are main inventors of the "prog" style of music, which means doing weird rhythms, lots of time signature changes, ball-squeezing vocals, and a good dose of random solos multiple times per song. Generally, this formula no longer equals progressive music, although Dream Theater used to actually be progressive....now they're more like regressive. Images And Words, Awake, and Scenes From A Memory to a lesser extent as the first too are great. Recently, they have not been great at all though.

I'll name some bands I consider to actually be progressive:

Arcturus, Ulver, Pain Of Salvation, Devin Townsend, Spiral Architect, Age Of Silence, Orphaned Land, Devil Doll, Scholomance, Ephel Duath, Atrox, Solefald, ...In The Woods, Subterranean Masquerade, Vintersorg.

Indeed. Notice how all of those bands have their own unique sound.

And the thread's purpose was to be funny, and really, every single person that posted got that except for you. So I'm going to stop about now. If you can't have a good laugh at a ridiculously funny picture of a band member, regardless of how much you like the band, then I think you should reconsider your thinking.

Edit: I have every Dream Theater album except for Train Of Thought, which I just don't feel the need to waste money on at the moment, as I'm about to pre-order the new Arcturus.

Seriously.....I think even if John Petrucci started strapping a dildo to his forehead at every concert some people would still take personal offense if someone posted a picture and laughed at the hilarity of his appearance.
