Independent Flims

Why? Because your characterization of indie movies is way off base. It gives me the feeling that you haven't really explored it much. It's simply not the case that most independent films are copies of major releases. In fact, the bulk of independent films are far more original than the bulk of major releases. Also, why are you talking about horror films? Horror films surely are not representative of independent films in general. Either you haven't watched very many independents or you just have terrible taste in movies. And I'm not going to recommend any independently released comedy or sci-fi films; I wouldn't know what to recommend because it just so happens that I prefer films of real substance which for the most part fall outside of the class of comedies and science fiction films. Your question was simple indeed, simple minded to be more precise. Learn something about films first and then try asking a question that's actually relevant.

Well, so I am dumb because I don't like most of the MANY independent movies I have watched? I am dumb because we don't share the same OPINION on these movies? Read my original post and you will see that I mention very clearly that I have watched many.

As far as the horror movies, we agree on one thing. I don't really consider them to be true indie movies either. I just mention that because some do.

So does it have to be depressing to be true indie to you? Because if that is the case, I think reality is depressing enough and look to movies for an escape. So do you not consider movies like Clerks to be true indie then?

I live in a city that worships indie movies. We have a full sized theater that shows nothing but indie. They even host an indie fest every year there. Our local paper does stories on it all the time. So I am very well aware of indie movies, have tried watching a ton, and find that the ones people rave about the most are indeed copies of story lines I have seen Hollywood already run into the ground and/or are depressing as hell. Is it deep to get all depressed? Well then go into a closet and write some dark poetry on black paper then, because I like something that uplifts me.

I do think there are great indie movies out there, but most of the time it is just cheap copies of what Hollywood has already overdone. Just like with music, the cream always rises.

It depends on what is meant by depressing. If "depressing" refers to any film that isn't a neatly packaged, hollywood cliche complete with a corny ending and sentimental love angle, then yes, it has to be depressing.

The cream like 50 Cent and War of the Worlds, right?

Now again I will ask, what are some good indie comedies or Sci-Fi films I might want to check out?

http://www-fi3.starwreck.com/ Sci-fi parody, so it's both. I actually haven't seen it myself, but what I've heard, it's funny, looks astounding considering the budget and has absolutely horrible acting. And anyway, it's free. :D It got a lot of press here (mainly because probably more people have seen it than any other finnish film ever, because it's free to download from the website).

"Water" is pretty good. Saw it a few weeks ago. Some sub-titles, but the storyline is riveting. Worth the admission.

I'm partial because this film was made right here in Winnipeg. The reviews are spot-on. Phillip Seymour Hoffman shows why he is amongst the elite in the acting profession.....he nails Truman Capote to a tee. Along with John Malkovich, Hoffman has never received the credit that he deserves. If the Golden Globe nominations are any indication, this may be on Oscar worthy in 2006.

Independent films are a thousand times better than those over-produced Hollywood movies. Has anyone had a chance to watch Blue Car? If anyone has, do you have any reviews you could share? The same goes for Last Days and Bully, I just never make it out to town to rent anything, anymore. The worst I.F. I've seen was Elephant, wow, that was such a waste.

I haven't seen this yet but I'll look for it.

And I agree with you...Hoffman is an amazing, unnoticed talent. He had a small, great role in "The Talented Mr. Ripley".

"Tommy...how's the peeping? Tommy...?" :D

It's been a "GREAT" year for Independent films. And this is a good place to start.

Hahah, please---She's so incredibly white looking. That whole story line epitomized Western views on Romance. Which makes sense, since the book was written by a middle aged white man.

However, if you get past the badly written book, and the fact that it's not accurate, I guess it's a good film.

For a great independent film, based on shockingly true events that took place in the 1950's, rent Heavenly Creatures. It's incredible...

Oh yeah and it's directed by Peter Jackson, of Lord of the Rings, except it's much better than those films.

I had no idea Memoirs was considered 'independent'...hrmmm, ya learn something new everyday, huh? And I lovedddd "Heavelny Creatures" - that is where I fell in love with Kate.

OT: I totally forgot I even made this thread and wow so long ago!
