ooooh instrument thread... i must answer!

1) What instrument(s) do you play?
Guitar, and a touch of piano though that's not really worth mentioning. I've hit some drums in a joke band before, and played bass on some of my recordings.
2) How long have you played it/them?
Guitar for uhhh.. 13 years? and we'll ignore the rest.
3) How long since you last played?
5 minutes i'd say..
4) Why did you want to learn to play it/them?
I was young and i wanted to be the next Motley Crue or Poison
5) How much time do you spend practising?
Depends.. practising as in scales and such? hardly any unless i want to overcome a specific weakness. But playing.. well, an hour or so a day.. not so much these days it seems
6) Do you abuse your instrument(s)?
Well i'm not overly careful with them, dropped my main guitar about 2 metres once.. and it's scratched and bruised.. oh well
7) Does/do it/they have name(s)?
Nope..
8) Do you let anyone else play your instrument(s)?
Sure.. though i'd be hesitant to lend out my Jem, but anyone can play it if they happen to be near.
9) Have you personalised them in any way?
There's a sticker on my guitar that says 'Maybe'. And i've added my own personal scratches and bumps :/ I made my own guitar too.. but it's too heavy to be used.. so uhh yeh
10) Have you performed in public?
Yep, used to do lots of 'lunchtime concerts' back when i was at school, that was basically in a cover band that played mostly metallica and similar. And my ex-band Unthroned performed two gigs last year, which were both great fun Makes me disappointed we split. But yeh, maybe 200+ people at those gigs, not huge, but everyone was attentive.
11) Did you get any money from that?
Yeh, maybe $30 or something, cost more to get to the first gig, was a 3 hour drive away
12) How good or bad do you reckon you are?
At playing? i'm not as fast or co-ordinated as i should be, but i think i have a nice feel and style and rarely struggle with anything that i want to play. I'm no god though. At writing i wouldnt want to be anyone else. At organising and achieving.. i suck
13) Does knowing how to play said instrument(s) help get you dates?
Apparently not.. but in many ways it helped me get some friends and not be considered a complete loser i guess.. hmm

Nope..

Guitar Since it's like an extension of myself, takes no thought to play, so music comes straight out. Other instruments take effort because i'm not good at them.

Guitar is great, piano can be wonderous though limited, saxophone can almost speak.. but yes, guitar.
18) What instrument(s) do you wish you played? Why?
Saxophone sometimes.. Drums so that i could record my own drums!! and i wish i could sing, because.. agerauhigadfgiusdhfguiuherghiGRGRRRRRRRRRRRR
19) Do you think you'll actually get around to learning what you want to learn?
I already have surpassed what my aims were in terms of skill with playing and writing. Now my aims turn to actually doing something with it.. at which point i seem to meet quite a few walls.
20) What instrument(s) do you LOOK like you play (what people think)?
Some people have said piano because my fingers are long and thin. Many used to say i dont look like a guitarist either.. or at least i dont look like i should be any good

Guitar and... recorder.

Guitar for 7 years; recorder since I was about 6, but it's not like I play anymore.

Guitar, about an hour or two. Recorder, about 3 hours ago when I first saw this thread and got nostalgic.

4. Why did you want to learn to play it/them?
Guitar, I wanted to be the next Kirk Hammett. I was forced into learning the recorder.

5. How much time do you spend practising?
A couple of hours of guitar-playing every day, overall, roughly.

6. Do you abuse your instrument(s)?
A couple of times I've hit the head of my guitar against a wall or cupboard or something, accidentally.

7. Does/do it/they have name(s)?
Nope, although maybe Santtu will mention again about me naming my guitar after her. But she'll have to be persuasive.

8. Do you let anyone else play your instrument(s)?
My brothers sometimes play on my guitar, but that's it.

9. Have you personalised them in any way?
Once upon a time I was thinking about painting a design on my guitar, so I painted a thin line on the back to see if the paint would stay on it well enough. It did, but I lost interest. The line is still there.

10. Have you performed in public?
Sort of. I played guitar in a little concert at school when I was 14, just backing someone on violin. A few performances in infants school with my recorder as well.

11. Did you get any money from that?
Hah. No.

12. How good or bad do you reckon you are?
Recorder, pretty bad since I've not played properly for years. But I did manage to produce a listenable version of Greensleeves this afternoon. For guitar, I'm not that good either. I can hardly ever play anything without numerous mistakes, and my soloing ability is virtually non-existant.

No.

I barely have any others at all, never mind a significant one.

Piano, and I don't know why really. I suppose I wouldn't mind being able to read sheet music, and I like the sound of pianos as well.

No, I'm too lazy and I've come to the conclusion that my fingers are crap, so there'd be no point.

I've never asked anyone really, and people are often surprised when they find out I can play the guitar. So probably none.

A Yamaha Pacifica guitar, which is really manky, and a *checks* uh, an Aulos (I think) recorder. Why I've kept it is beyond me.

Well, i took piano lessons for 6 years, but stopped taking them 6 years ago, so that would be 12 years. And i took guitar lessons for a while, but then stopped, and that would be about..1,5 years.

Well, we had a keyboard when i was tiny, and i learned to play some songs on my own, so then i started taking lessons and we bought a piano. Guitar i wanted to play because i knew some great guitarists and looked up to them and it seemed like an awesome instrument to play. I hesitated that quite a bit but then a friend of mine made me do it

Well, not really practising, but playing..hmm..usually 30 mins - a couple of hours a day.

Errr, no.

Mom plays the piano, which is torture. But no, i don't like anyone else even touching my guitar.

A little guitar, and I used to play the clarinet. And a very, very, very little piano

2) How long have you played it/them?
Guitar: about a year and a half. Clarinet: I played for 3 years. And I haven't really played the piano that much... I played for a year maybe.

3) How long since you last played?
Guitar: a few hours ago. Clarinet: 6-7 years ago Piano: ages and again ages ago

4) Why did you want to learn to play it/them?
I've always wanted to play the guitar, since I was 7 years old or maybe even earlier, because it rules , but when we were all going to start playing an instrument in 4th grade, I chose guitar but everybody thought I should choose the clarinet instead because my friend wanted to play it and for her to be able to do so they needed someone else who wanted to play as well. So, stupid as I was, I threw away my dream - and that for a stupid bitch who never deserved my kindness anyway. Oh, and I always wanted to play "Für Elise" on piano. I obviously still can't

5) How much time do you spend practising?
When I get round to it, about 15-30 minutes a day... often several 15 minute sessions a day, but weeks can pass without me playing at all.

6) Do you abuse your instrument(s)?
Yes of course, by attempting to play them, you should hear them cry

No

8) Do you let anyone else play your instrument(s)?
Yes, why wouldn't I?

No

Yes, when I played the clarinet I did.

I was pretty damn good with the clarinet, it's a shame I stopped playing, really... Piano, I never got beyond the simplest beginner stuff. Guitar - average, bordering on terrible, although I improve little by little.

Again, no

No, he loves them, once he gets his hands on the guitar or the piano it's difficult tearing him away from them

I'd like to be really really good at guitar and piano. But I'd love to play the violin, bass, drums, or any kind of strange medieval instrument.

Guitar was what everybody did back then.

Almost no time for practice any more, sadly.

As a matter of fact, yes.

Very rarely. I had quite a few things broken (by others as well) already, and it's fucking expensive.

I have a few stickers on my Bassdrum.

Yes, maybe in a total of ten times ever. That is, if you don't include occassional visitors during a rehearsal.

Yes we got a little money for a few gigs.

12) How good or bad do you reckon you are?
Having played since 8 years, i really could be much better than i am. Still, it's not too bad, but there are still many areas which need more training.

I think i never got one yet from mentioning it, but it could help. Musicians are said to be creative and stuff...

Yes i slept in the rehearsal room a couple of times.

I really would like to play the piano, simply because i could much more easily write my own music. I would have an idea about notes which i lack, i would have a more theoretical background, and i could do a lot of stuff with the computer. For drums you always need a couple of mates to jam with; with a piano, you could do it all singlehandedly.

19) Do you think you'll actually get around to learning what you want to learn?
No, if it were so, my timing would be better, my double bass drum much more faster than it is now. Usually i don't do the required stuff, i rather play along some good music.

I'm often taken for the guitarist, since i'm rather skinny for a drummer.

because the kazoo is the supreme musical instrument, the forge of titans and the minstrel of princes, conqueror of thrones and oblong tool of doom able to shatter the foundations of the earth through its melodious sounds

each night, until the break of dawn, i sit on a lounge chair on my balcony staring at the dark sky and connecting empathically to the sufferings of man. i incidentally play my kazoo as well

sometimes i forget myself and treat it roughly, but after a few minutes i run back to it, apologize, cook its favourite meal (goose liver) and hold it in my arms feeling there is no way we could ever be apart

archibald. if it likes you, my kazoo will answer to "chibby" as well


8) Do you let anyone else play your instrument(s)?

it seems not many are up to the task of treating it properly. whenever i suggest to a guest i could make them see, and touch, and maybe even play with my kazoo, they appear somewhat troubled by the notion, and either flee the scene in panic or refuse politely before starting to sob


9) Have you personalised them in any way?

my kazoo has a sticker saying "shake me all night long" on the side


10) Have you performed in public?

i'd like to try but chibby is much too shy

people who have heard tapes of me playing my kazoo have all claimed i suck, and since this is exactly what you need to do with a kazoo, i'm sure i'm quite good at sucking

dates are a little too small, but i can catch a peach or a pineapple if i throw my kazoo hard and fast enough

this is a rather personal question me and chibby are not prepared to answer yet

oh, i'm pretty sure she is right now

i wish i could play more kazoos at the same time, but i think i would need to learn to breathe through my ears first

i'm about halfway through learning how to play dream theater's "pull me under" on my kazoo, which means in another ten years i might even have it down perfect


20) What instrument(s) do you LOOK like you play (what people think)?

everyone easily recognizes me as a professional kazoo player. i'm sometimes stopped in the streets by total strangers who ask me about my kazoo or compliment me over my beautiful instrument


21) How many instruments do you own and what are they?

i bought another kazoo once, but chibby hated it and we had to bring it back to the original owner, a vet from arkansas
