iPhone 4S

Damn I was looking forward to getting an iPhone but this seems like such a minor upgrade that I don't know if its worth it.
Also,
64GB is $400 in the US and $1000 in Australia. Our dollars are almost equal. What the FUCK?

$400 tethered to a mobile provider contract in the US. $1000 outright and unlocked in Australia. Not really any different once plan costs are factored in on both ends. In fact, TCO is usually better by putting your phone on a contract for $X per month.

Seriously, people have some massively fucking stupid expectations. They pretty much pushed the envelope on what a phone can/could be doing, in terms of usability, functionality and looks. They cant keep bringing out something new and awesome every year. They really raised the bar in that respect, now nearly all phones are touch sensitive/employ different methods of user interaction. Had a massive discussion at work over this, people were literally pissed that the phone wouldn't be able to jerk them off in their sleep. What the fuck. I had to break this down for the absent minded. New on the plate for the 4S:

- Dual core processor (A5), up from single = faster phone
- More ram I believe (up from 512mb to 1GB i think)
- 64GB option (up from 16/32 options)
- Upgraded camera (from 5mp to 8mp), with better lens
- Faster graphics processor (up to 7x faster)
- Siri voice control system (this was originally developed as some military shit)
- New antenna design (switching design when one is performing as well as the other) + re-organisation of electric internals to promote better signal/gps strength
- Includes both GSM + CDMA chipsets, in essence making it a truly portable 'world' phone when traveling.
- HD video recording (1080p)

And for all 3GS/i4/iPad owners:
- Upgraded operating system (better notifications)
- iPhone to iPhone messaging, ala BlackBerry Messenger - i.e.: FREE SMS/MMS

If this isn't enough, consider yourself a greedy shitheel.

Not going off here (it is tethered), but maybe they just copied and pasted that part from the US site.

Yeah I was also talking to my boss about this at work, she was disappointed with the lack of features but at this point in time.. what new features could they realistically bring out?

A bigger screen, that's the ONLY redesign I ever wanted  And yes, the $199/$299/$399 prices are with a 2-year contract to pay exploitative monthly service charges with Verizon, AT&T, or Sprint

...except that everything hardware-wise you mentioned above is yesterday's news in Android-land, so none of it is in any way groundbreaking, and I really couldn't care less about Siri (and have unlimited SMS/MMS already)

I definitely don't agree on the screen size. I had a Desire HD and switched to iPhone 4. While the big screen was kinda nice when reading books and browsing the web, it made the phone unnecessarily big and clumsy. If I want a tablet, I'll get one :D

I agree, the Iphone 4 screen size is perfect for me, mor ethan that would be if I buy an Ipad sometime soon

I've had an iPhone since the first one came out, I hate how they're making 2 of them now like 3g then 3gs now 4 and 4s. Its basically the 4 and a half. All they did was add the stuff that they should have put into the 4 from day one. I'm a complete apple fanboy (2 macbooks,iPad,iPod touch, regular ipod, and iPhone) but I think i'll wait until the 5 comes out next year before changing my phone. The only thing I really want on my phone out of all the new features is Siri. Which from what I was reading, was apparently already an app in the app store that they pulled out to make it exclusive to the 4s. As far as the screen goes, the size doesn't bother me at all. If i'm using something that I feel I need a bigger screen with then i'll just switch over to the iPad. But for some reason watching the keynote made me think about picking up an apple tv.

Yes, but a) there are many phones that do 4.3" in a much more manageable form factor than the Desire HD (AKA HTC Inspire on AT&T over here), see: Galaxy S II (and to a slightly lesser extent HTC Sensation) and b) even if you do think the GSII is too big (it's right below that threshold for me, hence perfection IMO), there's still a middle ground between monster phones and the dinkiness of the iPhone screen in the form of 4" screen-toting phones; I defy anyone with hands the same size as mine (pretty average I think for my height of 5'11") to say the HTC Incredible S (Droid Incredible 2 over here), for example, is any less wieldy than the iPhone.

However, I admit that those who aren't total phone geeks like myself (mainly because 25% of my paycheck comes from selling phones on the top-3 US wireless carriers) probably just don't give as much of a shit as I do, so I promise I'll leave it alone from here on out  But I can at least feel vindicated knowing that most of the tech world seems to agree with me!

The camera slays everything else available. The screen still LOOKS better than anything else out there despite being smaller, and 3.5" hasn't been an issue for me - I watch movies/tv shows on Netflix with my phone all the time. And as most all Apple owners know, Apple does more with less consistently when it comes to hardware. The dual core chip they use will outperform competitor's chips of the same caliber - and some that are rated higher on paper as well. My experience with Android is it flat out does not perform as smoothly as iOS. And I have yet to play with any of the high-end Android phones that responded to touch as well either. But that's my experience so far. I did wish the new iPhone had a 3.7 or 4" screen, but the hardware upgrades and iOS 5, as well as the truly revolutionary Siri, are enough to keep me on board. I honestly don't understand the big deal about it having the same design as the 4... that design still seems like the classiest out of everything else out there. Not to mention I actually feel like I got what I paid for compared to the plastic bullshit everyone else uses, especially when you consider they cost the same (subsidized). What I don't like, though, is that AT&T changed it's upgrade policy regarding iPhones and I have to wait until after January 23 to get the $200 price, otherwise I have to pay $450 - fuck that. Before you were allowed to upgrade your iPhone every year at the same price as signing a new two year agreement (just adding 1 year to the existing contract). I got my 4 when it came out, over a year ago, and I was ready to throw my money down on the new one but... oh well.

well I'm getting one; I've hung on the my O.G 3g since the day it came out; and boy is it long in the tooth now. Been waiting for ta release to upgrade; but bored of shouting at my phone now.

Same. My 3G is the only phone I've ever owned that lasted me more than a year w/o issue (way more than a year). The reports on various android phones my friends have owned have been a mixed bag....I just don't see a reason to stray at this point in search of more impressive specs.

My 3G was bought in December 2008, still working, I bought the 4 about 6 months ago but still have the 3G as a backup, and I used it on my trip back to Venezuela last august and it still works fine. I also love how when I bought the 4 I simply plugged it in, hit "restore from backup" and the whole "new phone" hassle was gone. I'm definitely sticking with Apple, unless something else REALLY blows my mind instead of just compete and have slightly better specs, I will only upgrade to other IPhones.

Yeah android has had voice search since gingerbread but this is on another plane altogether. Single biggest feature IMO (even if it was previously available as an app). Will be fun watching Google try to play catch-up. But the longer I own my Desire HD, the more I wish it was my iPod touch with a telephone...

However I see phones as use it till it falls apart devices. No carrier plans around here. You want it? You gotta buy it. So I won't be buying a new phone until this Desire HD that I got for free gets run over by a truck/melts/disintegrates into subatomic particles.

i have a bb due to the keyboard really. considering upgrading to the 5 when it eventually comes out next year because i think i'd rather wait a bit longer and get something that will be better than the current 4s anyway... since apple releases an "s" half better version every year i'd rather have the 5 until the hypothetical 6 comes out 2 years later and i can upgrade and have the "5s" in between with like 1 extra feature lol...

that being said, i've been a huge bb fanfor like 5 years however i am a huge apple fanboy elsewhere. i could just not leave the bb keyboard which is far superior to anything else ever made. but every single other item the apple is > bb...

as far as droids, every one i've played with has just been really like not smooth and just like a pc in my opinion. impressive specs, seems ok when it works but it just seems to not be as smooth or natural to my brain. i am also used to all mac os and own an ipad so the osx family of architecture just seems natural to me. i really don't think droids compete with iphones and i do agree having a big screen is annoying if you are a commuter or are using your phone for business and work or plan on going out to dinner and not having a brick in your pocket. i think we all remember palm treos and the discomfort associated with it.

I despise the bb keyboard, fucking tiny screen due to the clumsy keyboard taking up a huge percentage of real estate. I'm over physical keyboards on a phone really. And bbs suck in every other way too, compared to an iPhone or an android phone. My wife has one of those machines and she regrets buying it

Just this week I got an Android (Orange SanFrancisco, which is a rebranded ZTE Blade) to replace my Blackberry and I couldn't be happier.

BBs are fucking terrible, slow, underpowered, ugly, shit OS, no decent apps, the apps it does have crash all the time, everything. The keyboard blows too. Even after two days I'm much faster on the Android touchscreen keyboard than I ever was with a year of the BB keyboard.

Overall I'm quite pleased with this mid-range Android, but it certainly is nowhere near the level of polish and quality of my iPad. Sorry 'droid fans, there is a huge gulf between the two operating systems, not to mention the quality of hardware with even the most expensive droids.
I've had a play around with a friends Galaxy S II and even that seems to have the same general problems despite its powerful hardware, it's still a bit laggy and un-polished.

I'd agree with Aramism; Android, despite its positive points feels very much like a PC experience.

The plan now is to wait it out and see what the iPhone 5, and the next generation of Android devices bring to the table.
