Iron Maiden set list 4/17/11 Tampa

This.

I did not see them nor am I familiar with their music. I just heard plenty of people that thought it was a joke and that they were terrible.

I just have an uber feeling they know someone that knows someone. Granted a lot of how you get your 'breaks' has to do with that, but really? I mean that seems like a slot for an established band. I mean like look a the opening bands track record from Iron Maiden, can we honestly say black tide is on the same level as those bands?

Someone's definitely pulling for them. They also were at Ozzfest a couple years ago or so.

Well, chances are the band is either on the same label, or are managed by the same company. I have no proof on this, other than knowing that this does happen on occasion where a WTF band gets added to one-off shows.

Who knows? Are BLACK TIDE from Florida? That could be a factor.

I remember ICARUS WITCH got added to a midwest HEAVEN AND HELL date a couple years back, based on where they are from.

you know what? Are they from Miami? hmmmmmmm must..... go......check..

They are from Miami. They were 15-16 years old when the first album came out. They did a cover of 'Hit the Lights' from Metallica on it. That was the first song they played Sunday.

This is the song 'Shockwave'.

anyone care to comment on black tides performance? I am not familiar with them, but it does seem odd that some random really young-membered-band gets to open for a band like maiden.

Aaron and Bryan went. Said it was fantastic.. I really wish I could have gone.

They totally sucked. I say that owning their last album, which I thought was a good blend of NWOBHM-ish meets radio friendly metal. First 2 songs were good (one being Hit The Lights) and the last song. All new material aside from first and last song. They didn't even play Shockwave.

The new stuff sounded like some Stained songs or something. Horrible!!! I heard they changed their sound, but c'mon, that was bad.

Yeah, I didn't want to be the one to say it, but they did suck. They started off by coming out to Metallica's "Hit The Lights" - kind of got the crowd into it - but it went way downhill from there.

A band like Kamelot should have gotten this opening slot. (Just saying a band like them, I know they are on tour somewhere.)

Yeah it's called being on a major label....
......
..............

Christ guys. "hurr I have no idea how Kanye West got where he is today, some1 must have known him."

Well, Blackguard were probably busy......................

Yeah, opening for Maiden can make or break you.
What would you say it did for BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE, other than make them a despised name amongst traditional metalheads. The same now will hold true for BLACK TIDE.

the Final Frontier debuted at number four in the Billboard 200 with 63,000 units sold

Fever is the third studio album by Welsh heavy metal band, Bullet for My Valentine. Containing eleven tracks,[3] the album was released on 26 and 27 April 2010 in the UK and in the US, respectively. The album sold 71,000 copies in the US and 21,965 in the UK in its first week of release to debut at position #3 on The Billboard 200 and #1 on Billboard's Rock and Alternative charts, making it the band's most successful record to date.[4][5][6]

Oh yeah, opening for Iron Maiden completely hurt that band. I don't get why they're even around, they should just call it quits because obviously opening for Iron Maiden tarnished their career in the eyes of many metalheads.

AS - You missed the point entirely, and pulled out of context what YOU wanted to. There weren't "metalheads" who purchased those Bullet for my Valentine CDs. If they were, how come they don't tour with other classic or current "metal" bands? They toured with Maiden, but that wasn't a major factor in selling 71,000 units of their current album. Keep in mind the Maiden tour was back in 2006. They have been on many other "modern" tours since then which is where they truly developed their fanbase.

Nice try though. Thanks for playing.

Come on man.......
Simon made an extremely valid observation.
If you are truly "in the know" as much as you "claim" to be, you would know there are a HELL of a lot of other factors than being on a major label that gets you on tours.....

We can sit for hours naming bands who were signed to a major that NEVER got on a major touring package or festival.

It wasn't so much directed towards Simon as much as it was directed towards everyone going "huh, well I guess they know someone." It's Interscope's best interest to use their power that other metal bands do not have access to to push them hard. They were pushed really hard on the last album too.

No my point is that all you have is your own highly subjective but not really accurate perception, which people have pointed out time and time and again on this board is a STUPID argument when talking about objective things like a band's relative success. YOU feel like opening for Maiden made them disliked even more, but you can't actually quantify that can you? Is it the case that alot of true metal fans went to see Maiden and hated Black Tide? Absolutely, I don't doubt that because you see people bitching about them here (and count me as one of those people that do not like the band as well), but I'm willing to bet dollars to donuts that a good chunk of the people at those Maiden shows caught onto the band.

Doing "modern" tours is necessary for any band. You don't just do one tour and that's it to be a successful touring act. Arch Enemy opened up for Maiden twice (once on the Dance Of Death tour, and once for Ozzfest 2005), and you don't see them doing the kind of numbers as Black Tide or Bullet. It's because both of those bands have the support and push of major labels. Just doing one big tour is not going to cut it no matter what your band sounds like if the goal is to sell 100,000 records or more.

Iron Maiden hasn't really had the greatest openers the past few years...BFMV...Trivium...Lauren Harris (lol). Let's face it, though. Nobody goes to see Maiden for the package.

Still wish they'd come back to Atlanta. Been a loooooooooooooooooooooooong time.

Aeonic -
Ok, push from the majors? Sure, it might help with financially backing the band up for the "buy on" for things like Ozzfest, etc.

I guess I forgot about the whole "Buy on" thing.

i rememeber many years ago, Nevermore were confirmed for WARPED TOUR, but then had to pull out because Century Media didn't want to pay the buy on. (Granted, this is what the "rumor mill" was saying, so I don't know if that is 100% accurate or not).

My point though too on Bullet and now Black Tide is you have to be careful, when taking on support slots. Look at that one band Pop Evil who was on the Priest / Whitesnake tour a couple years back. Not sure if anyone here saw them, but they were an even worse fit for that tour than Bullet or Black Tide are for Maiden.

You guys are good at pulling data. Go see how Pop Evil's numbers are. I am genuinely curious as that's not a name I see mentioned anywhere since that tour.

So, yeah, label support will help ya land these opportunities, but I think it can put a stale taste in the mouth of fans of the band you are supporting if you are really not the cup of tea.

On the flipside, if I was 20 years old and in a band that had the opportunity to open for Priest or Maiden, I wouldn't turn it down, even if I did have a shopping mall Goo Goo Dolls haircut!

Well, maybe that's exactly the problem.
Maiden's management / booking agent, aside from the Lauren Harris booking obviously, might simply go for the highest bidder in terms of "buy on" dollars.

As someone said before I think, Nicko might be a fan of BFMV, and specifically requested them, so cool for that I suppose

I'm not going to turn this into a Trivium argument, but at least they are a metal band with a decent fanbase. That makes sense. The Lauren Harris thing...well, we know why that happened. But you are right, they're notorious for having blah or bad openers. To their defense though, opening for Maiden is about one of the toughest thing a young or up and coming band can do. Maiden fans are incredibly fickle.

That band was TERRIBLE. They played here when Judas Priest did the British Steel anniversary tour. Definitely in the running for top 5 worst bands I've ever seen.
