Is Hellhammer an over-rated drummer?

NEVER HEARD OF HIM but yea i guess so i think the best drummers are the ones you never hear of......most GREAT metal should be kept underground

shut up you cockmuncher, no one cares about your pitiful attempts to be opinionated.

I would say yes, he probably IS overrated, but he's also an extremely good drummer and has showed his versatility in many different metal styles.

pitiful attempts? you're a hellhammer fan.

Jan Axel Hellhammer receives tons of great press, but is he really that good? I just dont see it. He can't compare to someone like Neil Peart.

Am I crazy? or is he simply over=rated?:err:
Hellhammer is a really cool dude, and he is good for what he does in Mayhem.
No one knows what this guy does while practicing by himself, so its kinda hard to judge. And why would you want to compare him to Neil Peart? Is that what "good" is by your definition? Cause if that's the case, all metal drummers must suck in your book.
I also believe that a lot of recognition comes Hellhammer's way due to the history of his band and the fact that he was along for the whole ride.

Why? Because I dislike his drumming and feel he's overrated? Yeah..

Faust Was WAY better and didnt drum pretentiously. So please.. Remove head from ass before posting.

One drums pretentiously by playing rhythms so excessively ornate, intricate, or all-out self-gratifyingly fast so as to distract and detract from the music as a whole. To overplay, yet assume the abundance of technical prowess warrants praise when a subtle beat-keeping or patter will enhance the msuic more than "look at me, look at me."

Hellhammer does this exactly half the time, therefore he's alright.

I'm not flaming, but how does one drum pretentiously? [/genuinelycurious]

Tried too hard to show how good he was.. If you listen to Anthems you can hear it a lot.. I guess I am the only one who thinks of it that way.. Just listen to teh drumming when Faust was there then Listen to Tryms.. You'll hear a major difference. Not in talent.. just in application.

Hellhammer is great, the drumming on Grand Declaration of war is supa tight bitch. Everything he has played on the drumming is good.

I agree.

Though when I first got into them I thought Trym was not only better than Faust, but the best drummer ever to play for any reason ever.

The drumming on DMDS is fucking awesome. The contribution it makes to the icey cold atmosphere is unbelievable - it shends a shiver up my spine with its impeccable timing. For that, he rules. I don't care for anything else he did. It doesn't phase me either.
