Why is Hellhammer (the drummer) held in such high esteem?

I don't use triggers, but I've got some kickass bpm. About 360. And I play flat-footed. I can't go for very long(obviously), but I can play Angel Of Death and Blinded By Fear.

Actually, when I do blastbeats, I have to pick my right foot up, or else I won't get that snare-bass-snare-bass sound. So my blastbeats are twice as loud as my doublebass volleys. I'm not so worried about how good I am per se. I just want consistency and stamina.

I can play much faster than Lars Ulrich, but I can't drum "One" because I can't turn my double bass rolls on/off like that. But I can play most of Death's "Painkiller" cover, because Christy is doing volleys at different speeds for most of the song. If he uses triggers, I won't feel as bad.

Any other drummers out there? Not trying to cannibalize the thread, but it is about Hellhammer and drumming, anyway...

Hello, I am a drummer. I am much better than lars. I can turn my rolls on and off better than him. I can go faster than 1000bpm w/ my feet. I practice to Flo (whom is way better), Trym, Nile, and other fun stuff. Hurray for drums!

If you set it so sensitive that just a tap will activate it, you're not gonna be able to play normal stuff, cos it's gonna react all the time, on every little tap, and it's gonna sound like shit... You'll get double hits (ghost hits or whatever)all the time and blah blah.. Of course you can edit shit in, let's say ProTools but it's gonna take forever and that would be cheating according to me anyway... And if you're gonna do it like that you could just program the whole thing/drum take instead... Pointless! If you play live triggers are just gonna reveal your bad playing if you use it like that anyway...

Yes of course they do. For one thing, its an electronic set-up, so if a drummer really wanted to, they could set it to play as many hits as they want for each time they hit the drum. Of course, I doubt many if any at all ever do that, but even when just used for one sound per hit, it still allows drummers to play faster because they don't have to hit the drums as hard; a simple tap will activate the trigger and play a full, heavy sound, so drummers can play faster (if they want to puss-out and just tap the drums) AND longer. That's part of the point when heavy/fast bands play live; no-one could really drum as fast as some death and grind allows on only an acoustic kit for a whole set....and certainly not playing every night.

I drum a tiny bit, I guess thats why I know a ton about em. I can't do double bass worth o shit, tho, cuz I have no practice on drums. what's your setup like nick?
I've got two high toms and a floor tom, a cheapo Pacific double bass pedal, and one bass drum. Then I got, snare, hihat, crashes(14/16/18), a 10 splash, and a 20 ride.

My set is made by Sound Percussion(weird--they normally make cymbal arms and stands), and I've got Zildjian cymbals sans my splash, a Wuhan. I've also got two LP blastblocks and a cowbell.

Dude, that's intense!:worship:

Seriously, how long you been playing? I've only been playing two and a half years, and drums are my third instrument, so I'm proud of myself no matter what.

Richard Christy and Gene Hoglan are my favorite drummers. Hellhammer definitely has a lot of stamina, as someone else mentioned. And I agree that his work in Arcturus was incredible. He's just good at what he does..anyway, it doesn't matter who is better than him.

Ah...a Death fan I see...

I like Richard Christy a lot too.

Does anyone else find Danny Carey from Tool a little overrated? He's good, no doubt, but people claim him better than Peart or Mounier.

I think Danny Carey is overrated...he's good, but just like all the other masses of fucking Tool fans, too many people think that anyone in Tool can do no wrong. It makes me wanna vomit crushed glass.

First off, in the trigger issue...the main purpose is one of uniformity of sound. I use triggers, because my bassdrums are actually slightly different woods, and cannot produce the same tone, no matter the dilligence of tuning. Triggering allows me to create the same sound with both drums.

on another note, I'm a drummer, been playing for about 10 yrs now, though i started quite young, and there is more than a little wasted time int hat total. I think I'm a pretty competent techincal death metal drummer. I have no idea what my bpm is, but my feet are reasonably fast, and my endurance is decent, but could be better. I have some mp3s on my computer of a former band, but have no idea how to share them...ah well

Read the sentence again

''I have no idea what my bpm is''

I'm pretty sure he meant that he doesn't know exactly how fast he's able to play.

Hahahahaha......owned!

If I were you, I'd get Soulseek www.slsk.org i think... i know its slsk.something. But yeah, Soulseek has plenty more underground metal than Kazaa or any of those other stuff, and when you get a user name, you can tell someone to search for you on Soulseek and when they find your name, can d/l whatever you share. Try it out

...anyway...

i think that the most important thing on double kicking drums is precision and clean sound....together with speed obviously...

i think the most incredible metal drummer nowadays is John Longstreth ex-origin now in skinless....

then for double kicking pete sandoval and gene hoglan are fuckin' machines....

trym is really fast and clean...

but the most incredible is DAVE MURRAY of ESTRADASPHERE....

he is a fuckin' monster jazz trained drummer with an incredible double kicking...
