Panopticon is a really great album. It's mostly instrumental. They sound kind of like Mastodon, but with a very different approach, although Hearts Alive isn't too far off from what Isis is like.

I'm sorry but they really don't sound like mastodon at all!
On there early ep's, Isis' sound is best described as intense sludge metal, very heavy and raw. Then on there first album, Celestial, they started to incoporate a more layered, progressive sound. This resulted in a kind of textured sound, and an intense listen, with long melodic passages that build up to incredible, and at times savage, crescendo's.
They've been continuing this theme ever since, with oceanic and panopticon, both these albums are incredible in my opinion, and are both worth getting. There earlier stuff is good as well, but only if you have a penchant for sludge metal.
I'm glad the SOD guys agrees with me. Some times I think I'm crazy. It's like every one likes this band like every likes to eat and sleep. Ithink, what the fuck is going on b/c I hate this band and every one else have abandoned their porn habit b/c they have panopticon to do the job.
Believe it or not, but I've never checked these guys out. I heard they sound like Maudlin of the Well/Kayo Dot, and that turned me off from checking them out.
^I can't imagine that's true. Neurosis and Cult of Luna are their closest peers, and Isis is better than those bands. I've never heard MotW/Kayo Dot, but they've got strange instrumentation and everything, and Isis is perfectly standard in that sense.
The song So Did We sums up what the band is about.
