what i do is i have the drummer play through the song a few times until his kicks are pretty accurate. Then I Paste midi notes where the kick transients are. Then i quantize the midi notes to the grid. Then I send the new midi kick and click through the drummers head phones and i tell the drummer to just play with his hands and tap lightly on the floor if it is awkward for him. That way you have no kick in the over heads or any of the other mics. Works great, i do it on just about every project. Most drummers are kool with it, every once in a while a drummer wont go for it.
