Listen to Paskutinė Akimirka

Rocks!!!

Some notes:

The new Falkenbach is fucking awesome. It is more black metal oritented yes, which is a good thing.
The new Obtest is also awesome.
Buy them both.

Meh, with all due respect, I've had that album for several years now and listened to it lots and I just don't think they do to any discernible extent. No more folk in it than in, say, Dissection.

That's definitely fair enough; it could have been when I listened to it (meaning, other albums with folk things going on bled into my brain). Dissection is really what I was thinking of, I guess it's that whole melodic mid-paced black/death metal thing (which is really similar to folk-influenced metal IMO).

oh hrm, I always assumed viking metal was bullshit like Amon Amarth

I do like most of these bands listed, maybe I don't have such a thing against it afterall.

Amon Amarth is groove-laden death metal, with viking themes, lyrics & imagery. *Most* viking metal incorporates a healthy dose of epic-styled songs w/ lots of native folk melodies, whether they be from Scandinavia, Germany, Ukraine, etc.

thanks, I always just heard this music referred to as "pagan/folk/etc" and actually hadn't heard the viking moniker for this style until.. uh. this thread or maybe the last viking thread a few days ago.

and too many years of hearing "Amon Amarth" and "VIKING METAL RULES" in the same sentences had me thinking that there was a difference, and this viking-themed death metal was tr00 viking metal

I now feel relieved and welcome this thread with open ears.

viking metal?!?!?

a funny term

im still trying to figure out what makes the style distinctive

does tom petty count?

Taunusheim sound very German, nice band but not as good as...

Odroerir - Götterlieder

Odroerir_Cover.jpg

Listen to Weltenanfang

Mid-paced and actually not really metal at all. Some fat riffing now and again for the sake of it, but the bulk of the album consists of beautiful "fireplace" folk tunes based on the Icelandic poem "Edda". The album carries a deep and genuine feeling of sadness and the mixed choirs (male+female) are of unusual quality for the genre.
