Viking/Pagan Metal

Turisas, Windir, Wintersun

EDIT: How the hell could i forget Suidakra? Ok, not really pagan/viking but i know you'll love it. Check out C14 Measured By Infinity. Please

Suidakra is amazing. I wouldnt get Command to Charge though. They changed their sound on that album. Get Emprise to Avalon. One of my favorite albums I own. I didnt see Moonsorrow in the list. If you have not heard any of their stuff then check them out. They are my favorite band next to Amon Amarth.

I've had all Suidakra's albums for a while now, but they're not really a favourite of mine for some reason.

Wintersun is ok, and I think I have most of Windir's albums.

Turisas I've had on my list to check out for ages now (I think I confused them with Tiwaz or sumn and thought I didn't like them or sumn)

I didnt see Moonsorrow in the list..

is there anything viking about them? I've always considered them Black Metal, though I haven't given them a long enough listen (that new album was what, two fuckin 30 minute songs? I hate that shit!!! but what I skimmed through sounded good lol)

Is there an official definition for viking metal or is it just anything relating to vikings?

Some of the bands you've listed up there I've always considered folk metal (Finntroll, Eluveitie, Asmegin), though I guess you might mean the Pagan Metal category, which I'm not really sure how that's classified either.

I've always thought of Viking Metal, as epic metal that hasn't lost it's balls. Instead of going on an epic quest for the King to fight the evil ones, it's more like ride into battle, kill shit, rape, pillage, and get drunk off your ass.

Anyone care to help me understand the difference and definitions of Viking, Pagan, and Folk Metal?

pagan metal tends to be more like black metal (e.g., Solgrav, pagan lyrics, folk instrumentation, but no clean/chant sorta folk vocals), viking metal tends to be more like folk, but it seems to change up a lot more. I consider pagan/viking pretty close to the same thing, generally a middle ground of bands who aren't paganless/folkless clear black metal and aren't just folky pleasant sorta bands (e.g., Finntroll, Glittertind) with no real black metal grunt to it. Falkenbach and Pagan Reign for example, they're not just folk, but not just black with culture, so I consider them pagan/viking. I'd only really distinguish a band as not viking but pagan if they had no folky moments but still had that, what's the word I'm lookin for, that european melody and instrument influence.
