Katatonia ?

ok the new albums are metal though? only with lfdgd did they really deviate from playing metal, and lfdgd sucks a lot
I have only heard: Dance of December Souls, Brave Murder Day (listening to it for the first time right now), Last Fair Deal Gone Down, and Viva Emptiness. Viva Emptiness is only marginally heavier than Last Fair Deal Gone Down, and to be honest, I don't know on which album they started playing music in that vein.

i do though as i'm one of the biggest katatonia fanboys ever!

and viva emptiness is metal any fucken way you try to slice it. it's kind of "modern" sounding, yes, but "viva emptiness" is a rare example of doing that shit RIGHT.

Well, when did they start playing metal in that vein? Or rather, what was the last album that sounded somewhat like Dance of December Souls or Brave Murder Day? I ask because I'm wondering if there are any more of their albums that I would like that I have not checked out yet.

+1.

I like BMD a LOT, but everything else of theirs I've heard (i.e. the more modern stuff) just isn't my bag - did they do much else before hand that was akin to BMD ?

Hmm now having listened to both BMD and DoDS, I don't know which of the two I like better. It's too bad that they don't have any other albums that sound like those two.

i don't know if you noticed but bmd and dods sound NOTHING alike, to the point where they might almost have been made by two different bands

"12" is kinda reminiscient of the old style though, mostly because it dated back a few years when they recorded it while all the other songs were new

EDIT: also if you like growly era katatonia you should REALLY check out the two OCTOBER TIDE albums -- two members of katatonia making music in the vein of old katatonia as a side project after katatonia went clean vocals. they are kinda hard to find but you can always download eh.
BMD and DoDS don't sound much alike, but certainly sound more alike to each other than they do to the other albums. They are both extreme doom metal (doomdeath) albums, but sound different. I'll definitely have to check out October Tide. I checked out Daylight Dies - No Reply, because I heard it sounds like early Katatonia, but I don't see much of a similarity, although the album rules.

i'd argue that "discouraged ones" is musically much closer to BMD than DODS is, and i've heard all katatonia albums 200000 times

listen harder... sure daylight dies ain't a straight katatonia clone but the similarities are REALLY OBVIOUS

you might want to try rapture from finland as well

Also, have you guys heard Scarlet Heavens? Recorded back in 1994, completely different from anything else they've done, one of the best Katatonia songs ever.

edit oh yeah and forgot to mention they shoulda done a few more songs like this :(

it's brilliant but i don't particularly think that's a road they should have went further down

Katatonia were infinitely better when they actually played metal. With their new CDs, they would not be out of place on a tour with Coldplay.

I don't know about all that now.... Katatonia are infinitely more bleak and dark than Coldplay...they could tour with H.I.M. or something maybe, but Coldplay is stretching a bit...

Old Katatonia is nowhere near as good as everything from Discouraged Ones on.

I guess I said that because the vocalist does sound quite a bit like the vocalist from Coldplay at times on Last Fair Deal Gone Down, which is more of a dark indie rock album than a metal album.

I am of the opposite opinion. I like the first two albums better than every thing else. Their only album I really dislike is Last Fair Deal Gone Down, since it is an indie rock album, and not a metal album, and I can't stand indie rock.

I like them all! Call Last Fair Deal Gone Down what you will, it's not that different from any of the post-BMD albums. It has the most songs that I skip (sometimes I go straight to track 7), but when they get it right, like on Clean Today and The Future of Speech, it's great!
