Kevin Talley Guitar Contest Feb 2012 (real drums,ENGL SE 6L6, Torpedo VB-101, Trilian

Here is my submission to the "Kevin Talley Guitar Contest Feb 2012" (see original thread here : http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/andy-sneap/658383-kevin-talley-stere-drum-tracks.html)

Premixed drumtrack was provided by the almighty Kevin Talley (drummer for Daath, Six Feet Under, and ex-tons of amazing bands : Dying Fetus, Misery Index, Chimaira, ...), i did the rest (guitars, bass, premastering...) :

-Guitars : Schecter Hellraiser C1-FR (EMG81/EMG85) - Little Labs RedEye3DPhantom (DI/Reamp box) - Engl SE 6L6 - Torpedo VB-101 (engl 4x12 V30 cab, Blue Dragonfly Condenser Mic, close-miked, low cut, post-eq) - RME FireFace UC interface - Reaper (DAW) with HighCut EQ.

-Bass : MIDI programming in Guitar Pro, and then played by Trilian VSTi in Reaper (DAW), with just a low end boost EQ.

-Mixing, premastering : in Reaper (DAW)

the usual disclaimer : sloppy playing, old amp tubes, old strings

I did my best considering the short amount of time i had left to do it. It's hard to write a song upon a drumtrack though. Recipe for writing phony riffs IMO, which happened a bit here

09-Bass Trilian FullRig-consolidated-120225_0415 : Trilian bass export (built-in effects rack (compressor/EQ/amps for distortion) and DI/miked amp blend (approx. 40% DI, 60% Miked Amp) included, so not a raw DI bass tone at all), to be used for reference or mixing
09-Bass Trilian DI&MicBlend-consolidated-120225_0415 : Trilian bass export (built-in effects rack (compressor/EQ/amps for distortion) bypassed, only DI/miked amp blend (approx. 40% DI, 60% Miked Amp), so not a raw DI bass tone at all either), to be used for reference or mixing
09-Bass Trilian DI-consolidated-120225_0415 : Trilian bass export (built-in effects rack (compressor/EQ/amps for distortion) and miked amp bypassed, only DI (bass pickup), to be used for reference or mixing

GUITARS : for each performance, 2 tracks were recorded at the same time : a DI track, and a miked track (cabinet miking and post-EQ simulation through the torpedo vb-0101)

2 rythm guitars (L01 and R01), to be hard-panned on each side

4 additional guitars :
1 clean, 1 lead, 2 extra (L01 et R01, one on each side)

SONG MIXDOWN (made by me) : KevinTalleyFeb2012Contest_Djabthrash_20120227 : for reference (aligned with guitar DIs and bass export)

I'm very curious to know if those DIs and miked tracks are "good" (i know the performance is not great, i'm thinking more about the levels/editing/recording quality here) or not, since it was the first time i was tracking and editing both DIs and miked tracks at the same time.

Also curious to hear my guitar tracks reamped by other people

Alright ! I just have to retrack properly two mini lead guitar parts and then export all the DIs. I'll keep you updated !

This is the first time i track both miked + DI tracks at the same time, so for me it will be a good test to see if my DI tracks are good or not.

Listening to your clip i hear some weird stuff tho', as if the tracks weren't aligned with each other or something (bass seems really late for starters).
Also sounds like the guitars are a tad boomy during the palm mutes.

I was going for the ultra bass peavey sound. I was so lazy today that I just aligned the drums, I'll fix the wrong stuff another day . Check the link, the bass should be ok now, I think...

That Bass DI you got there, is it from Trillian? Is it able to make DI signals out of the mic'ed models we hear?
