Kevin Talley Mixing Contest - DEATH "Crystal Mountain" cover DIs

Yes it sounds like that doesn't it. Just checked again, but it's ok. Well I tried one more mix, but with another amp on the second guitars. It seems better to work better to me, this way.

Didn't compare with the previous mix but i don't seem to hear the chorusey effect anymore, and the mix sounds good so...

EDIT : the only thing that bugs me is that the lead guitars are too low in the mix... you might wanna raise their volume a bit (and automate the rythm guitars volume down a bit on those parts as well) and then the mix will be smokin' !

Thanks Djabthrash. Completely agree about the leads but to be honest I "ignored" those a little bit because I'm kinda waiting for vocals to complete the mix. Still hoping for those haha. :)

Thanks for the critiques, did some more work on my mix, any tips would be great.

Thanks for the feedback on my mix (sorry i didn't reply earlier),now listenign back to it i agree with the roomy sound of drums and guitars. I might work on that soon.

I also think i went a bit too far with the kick boom/subs :) (which is kind of ironic since i first listened to your mixes and said your kicks could use more sub :) ).

Last but not least, i feel my OH (or at least the spot HH track) is a bit too loud and too compressed also.

Might also try the snare phase reverse thing.

Gave a new shot at my mix :

-rythm guitars and central solo lead guitar : reduced the distant/roomy feeling and brought back more body and less high mids : put the mic way closer to the center, and played with the phase (variphi) to get them fatter (all in the torpedo PI-FREE miking section); made the guitars a tad louder also (since less high mids made them seem less loud in comparison)

-drums : decreased the roominess and hihat proeminence a bit : reduced the volume of the room and overhead tracks a bit; raised the overall volume of the drums for compensation

So here's my new mix :

PREMASTERED (GlueComp + Gclip + Gclip) :

NOT PREMASTERED :

And the previous mix for comparison :

PREMASTERED (GlueComp + Gclip + Gclip) :

NOT PREMASTERED :

Wouldn't mind (if i have time) :
-trying out the phase flip thing on the snare
-trying reamping the L80 R80 guitars on a different amp for a richer and maybe less chorussey rythm guitar sound
-adding a chorus or flanger effect on rythm guitars on the weirdo riff

And when the contest is over, and hopefully the vocals track uploaded here, trying a new mix with the retracked bass/guitars/vocals you guys provided.

@the one who suggested the phase flip thing on the snare : how do you do it in Reaper or Superior 2 ? Didn't find any plugins that had this option... Help is appreciated.

Here's the option for doing this (blue = phase flipped):

Will react on the posted mixes later on.

Sounds like a huge band of frequencies is absent from your mix or something.

Did you do some weird premastering job on it ?

EDIT : also, bass and guitars need some cleaning up in the lows

Thanks for the comments. I am in the process of treating my room. No weird premastering on it. However, I am wondering about midrange translation issues and more so, midrange choices, primarily related to the guitar parts.

Original Mix: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/12416360/mixingcontest.mp3

In that mix I was cutting some mids on the rhythm guitars.

New mix: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/12416360/mixingcontest2.mp3

In this mix, I removed the eq cut. Comparing it to some references, this may be the better choice, or perhaps somewhere in between.

However, comparing to references, I don't feel like either have a complete band that is missing.... does anyone else feel this way?

What do you monitor on? I checked out your mix, it sounds like you have both a high pass and low pass filter on it. Kind of like there is a blanket on your mix.

Deadline was yesterday ! Didn't have a lot of time left so i just cleaned some snare bleed mess, tried the snare phase switch trick also but it didn't do much so i didn't use it in the end, and called it a day (i wish i put some flanger/phaser on the epic riff but didn't have time) :
