KISS: THE ELDER

Haha, I actually find Dynasty not too cheesy at all, especially with Hard Times, Magic Touch, (the AWESOME cover of) 2,000 man, Charisma...and a few others. That was the very first LP I ever purchased with my own money!

Metaldude, as to Live at the Fillmore, if you get it, I think you'll find the tune, "I Walk on Gilded Splinters," the proto-type for all the longer tracks on Alive I, ala 100,000 years, etc. Plus, the riffs here in there are VERY 'Watchin' You," and "She,"ish in places. Finally, I'm positive Paul was really copying Steve Marriot's vocal style, especially on things like the live version of, "I Want You," on Alive II....you'll see what I mean. Paul is a professed Steve Marriot fan. I'm pretty sure that I read an interview with ACE where he said he was in the audience at the Fillmore Show that was taped, which was in New York of course in 1971, right around the time of Kiss's formation...

Humble Pie was definitely one of those bluesy white English bands, but they were very much a hard rock band too. They fall into the category of, "missing link," in my mind, as they kind of bridge the gap between those two genres - Late 60s blues from England and 70s hard rock. They are more of the latter though, much more a hard rock band that is. That album in particular (Rockin' the Fillmore) is stellar. The guitars interplay just like Alive I. That's one of the things I like about the Alive records, and Cheap Trick's live at Boudakan - they both have two clearly defined guitar parts going at the same time. A lot of bands aren't that clever anymore. The last record I can personally think of that had a similar interplay was Appetite for Destruction...
Incidentally, one of those guitar parts on the Humble Pie record is Peter Frampton, before he was, well, Peter Frampton.

Also, Metaldude, the things said about the new album thus far give me hope! I'd heard some of the facts you posted here, and it all has promise.

Yeah I have my fingers crossed real tight for this one and for Paul in general..he's gonna work his ass off on it and it's been too long. 11 years since Circus..

I wish Ace and Peter were on it, but it seems like even if they were it would be in photos only anyway...:erk:

But I am starting to have more respect for Paul these days..I dunno..I sense something with the guy...this will not sound like his last solo album...I do predict a strong 70's riff styled KISS record.

I hope I'm right..my fingers are crossed on this one.

All of the Ace songs on that album are awesome. Also, I think "Sure Know Something" is real good for a cheesy pop/rock love song.

i enjoy the elder. not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. asylum and hot in the shade though are pretty bad outside of the singles and one or two album tracks

I am not crazy about The Elder, but I am not really a huge Kiss fan. I actually prefer the 80's Kiss with Kulick. Some don't like Crazy Nights and Asylum, but I think it is their most "complete" releases.

That's interesting..I prefer the classic KISS and love the Elder..however Asylum and Crazy Nights ARE good.

You don't hear often that some people think these are the best years, though everybody knows these fans are out there.

Makes me wanna toss one of these on for a long overdue spin.

That was my problem PM with Hot in the Shade..was that it was too long...I REALLY have to be in the mood for this before I play it. After all these years it's a hard one to re-call songs off the top of my head as well..outside of the singles,Silver Spoon and Cadillac Dreams.

Regardless of how other fans, the band, or critics felt about "Music from 'The Elder,'" it still remains one of my favorite Kiss albums to this day.

Is it a great album? No.
Is it a great Kiss album? No.
Is it a Kiss album? No.

Then, why do I love it?

For me, the music is still well beyond many other bands, and it confuses the hell out of people when they hear this and try to get it wrapped around their brains that this is the same band that created "Rock and Roll All Nite" only 6 years prior. Even if the internet existed 28 years ago and we could hear this stuff before it was released, I would have still purchased the album.

Also, the band was willing to take a shot at something many other bands weren't doing at the time, and it forced them to get their heads straightened out and put out one of the better Kiss albums the following year, "Creatures of the Night." :kickass:

Seriously, if this is seen as a failure, we should all fail so grandly!

Incidentally, with all this Kiss talk going on, despite the greatest hits touring package the band has become, there is still talent in (or associated) with that band. Two of the better shows I've seen over the last few years were Paul and Ace's solo tours. I really thought they were both great, straight forward rock shows. Neither of them suffered for lack of a big, flashy production, and both chose great setlists that really highlighted the good songwriters that Kiss have always been. As Paul always said in the 80s, "the makeup never wrote one single song, that was us," and he was right. Sure, there career trajectory would have been very different without all the flashpots and makeup, but they are definitely a band that I still would have loved. Far too many songs come from them that stand as all time favorites with me for that not to be true. Things like:

King of the Night Time World
God of Thunder
Flaming Youth
Parasite
Got To Choose
Watchin' You
She
I Stole Your Love
Makin' Love
All American Man
Larger Than Life
Rock and Roll Hell
War Machine
I Want You
Take Me
Mr. Speed (!)
Hard Times
Magic Touch
2,000 Man
Goin' Blind
Coming Home
A Million To One....

and I haven't even gotten to the solo records, hits, or albums we've mentioned in this thread. Kiss is fucking awesome.

Yup, like yourself, Kiss was a huge influence on my childhood. I've gone on a hiatus from much of their music in recent years, but I still love 'em. Can't imagine how differently FS would sound without Kiss (probably quite a bit different - strutter was the first song I learned on guitar).

How do you find the 4 1978 solo discs? Personally, I can't stand any of them and there are only a handful of songs (mostly Ace's) that I can even listen to.

That said, I really enjoyed Paul's Live to Win disc. The title track was great. Gene's Asshole album was, well, shit. Horrible, bloated, awful production. Should have been shelved.

I really loved Eric Carr's Rockology disc. Even though a lot of the tracks were raw, there were a half dozen songs that I played regularly for years. Somebody's Waiting, Eyes of Love, etc. How they never wound up on Kiss records is beyond me.

I like Paul and Ace's 78 solos alot. Peter's is a pass, but Gene's is actually palatable and even good in places. Ace and Paul's are the Rock and Roll ones though, and Paul's especially shows he is probably the single greatest musical force in Kiss, or he gives Kiss the Kiss-ness. Gene writes well too, but he's more of the iconic visual image of Kiss. As an aside, I was always impressed with Gene's ability to play some of the more complicated (for Kiss anyway) bass lines and sing at the same time. They really are all quite talented.

Live to Win is not too bad at all. I'm banking on Ace's new one being the best modern solo release though.

I have to agree that Paul is quite a vocalist,on the "Oath" his high pitched vocals actually sound very good.I have a feeling I might enjoy the Elder.

No doubt. You just hit on most of my favorite songs from them.
