having not tried it, i can only speculate.. but mixing LCR seems like a bit of a straight jacket..

also i could never do it, because LCR sounds like MCR.. haha.

I dont usually pan drum overheads 100 % L or R. I think my mixes have IMPROVED since I stopped panning my overheads 100 %. guitars, vocals synths get panned all the way.

I agree with marcus`s statement about panning the direct sounds to match their position in overhead tracks (toms).

but yeah, I understand that most tend to over think the whole panning thing for sure. sometimes less is more
