Lars....

Still Lars has managed to perform great on the past records. Way better then about 99% of the kids of today. Remember to get a nice sound WITHOUT any sample enhancement every hit has to be perfect when it comes to fills etc. And yes he sucks today but whatever, who cares. He doesn't clearly.

James is still one of the best rythm guitarist of all time.

Tbh James and Rob are the only current members of Metallica I've EVER thought were any good on a technical level. (Infectious Grooves with Trujillo was awesome!) Fanboys just think Kirk and Lars are good cause they're in Metallica pretty much...

As for songwriting quality, they've done some great stuff together. Don't know how you could take this band seriously after hearing the new single though.

I think we can all agree that whether metallica is a good band is subject to the eye of the beholder and not any one person can say they suck or rule as gods. I have no remorse for any comment I have made in this thread, I can escape any scorn unscathed and not think I've pulled the shortest straw in the minds of the fanboys, of which the blind love is sad but true. Apparently nothing else matters to these people but Metallica and they feel the need to carry a holier than thou approach to liking a band. Well it doesnt make you the hero of the day to defend Lars or any of those guys, trust me. Am I wasting my hate on Lars? I dont hate the guy but I do think alot of time he's thinking he is better than you in many interviews and has a bad attitude as well. But the fanboys will still get all frantic and throw shit at you and say you're some kind of monster for stating your opinions to add fuel to the flames but I will fight fire with fire and while being broken beaten and scarred with stand my ground until the four horsemen ride across the horizon at the end of life for whom the bell tolls.

That was getting difficult toward the end lol.:D

"Wow" in a good or bad way?

Wow at how sloppy it is, in a bad way.It sounds like they even cut the solo short, maybe they could tell he was having trouble? I realize the whole song was faster than the album version, but if Kirk was playing guitar hero, that would have been like a 30%...

Arsenu, I don't think anyone here is disputing the fact that Metallica, at one point, was quite possibly the biggest (not just metal) band on the planet. For me, they are the reason I started playing guitar and consequently the reason I am involved in music period. I still have an unbelievable amount of respect for them and the influence they had on, what is very likely, a vast majority of the musicians on this forum. The issue is that, in the last few years, they have become almost a parody of themselves. Jame's vocals, Kirk's solos and Lars' drumming and the new stuff they are writing in general are almost laughable at this point. For me, I started losing respect for them when the whole Napster thing came about. Yes, I agree with them on the fact that it is their music and it is wrong to steal it but it seemed like they were bitching just to bitch. Obviously, this is just my opinion but I'm sure most who have commented similarly in this thread will agree with me.

as iv'e said before, iv'e seen them twice, the first time june 2010 in israel and the performance was a bit sloppy and the second time 2 months ago and they were absolutely AMAZING.

i don't know if it was a coincidence, one time thing or maybe they took it more seriously being a huge venue but they did not miss a single note and were tight as fuck!

lars, kirk, robert and james all gave a perfect performance!
i really don't give a shit about the napstar thing actually, it has nothing to do with their music and therefore it's not interesting.

about their new material, it blends very well with the rest of the show and as good as any other song they play. the album's would have sounded better being produced by Andy (farting would sound better if it's produced by andy) but still it's sound really good LIVE, which is what metallica is all about.

which leads me to wonder about how our perception of music has changed over time. since these guys have been around for a while now it's interesting to hear people complaining about lars going up in tempo or not playing "tight", things that no-one gave a fuck about when digital sequencers were not around. just thinking out loud here...

oh and btw james's down-strokes are so good i wouldn't be surprised if he's fapping using down strokes only :tickled:

For the ticketprices these guys ask a enjoyable performance is expected, and nothing less. No need to be perfect or "like the CD", but it's gotta be without a major fuck up in every 2nd song (mainly Lars and Kirk).
If I want that then I can go see some bad underground bands for free or less then 5€.

Also: how the hell do you manage to be incapeable of playing your songs after you played it 1 million times?

I get pissed when I hear my favorite songs getting slayed (like "Justice For All" and "Dyers Eve" the last time I saw them).
Luckily "Blackened" was cool every time I saw it live

To be fair they have barely played most of AJFA since the original tour for it.
So they probably haven't played those songs all that much.

Kirk and Lars have always been sloppy.
Like I said earlier, I think Metallica's main issue stems from the fact that they are a metal band that is completely surrounded by an environment that is in no way conducive to writing metal or maintaining the frame of mind/attitude needed to be any good.

"Dyers Eve" and "AJFA" I think was a rare thing to see live...think I read that somewhere, cause after the AJFA tour lars said that those 2 songs were way to hard to play live or something like that.
So even if they were capable to record it (less studio magic back then, so I guess at some point they were able), I'd prefered to not have seen them live at all, rather then seeing them with a bitter taste.
Maybe my problem is that I like the songs that need to be played pretty tight to sound good though.

I'm sure there's ride cymbal in Metallica. Bleeding Me has one and the 2nd verse even has a bongo or congas or something. And Lars knew how to make music sound good, Bob Rock says that the black album drums sound that way because of how Lars hits the drums. The Black Albums drum sounds go done in histroy as pretty much the best sounding drums on a metal album. And that is because of Lars. I remember reading how obsessed Lars was about finding the right studio room so his snare sounded right on the earlier albums. He was playing drums on the most popular/influencial/best selling metal of all time............ he sucks now but give the man a break, he influenced all of you guys. And the vision of finding the right room, playing the most basic beat but hitting the skins right, that's the genius, and yes he is a musical genius, or was at least

And I'm proud of Lars for the whole Napster thing. Look at what illegal downloading has done to this industry, he was the brave one who actually stood up and put his reputation on the line. It wouldn't be fun having your fans turn around and disown you when all you do point out that people are stealing from you. You don't steal from someone just because they're rich. Metallica are the easiest target in metal because they are the most popular.....and important

^ haven't really looked into it, but if that's true maybe Ride was the only album they used it... nevermind

all in all... "down-stroke fapping" is a pretty funny image IMO

^Schaffer is also a machine live, never would have noticed sloppy stuff or major oh-ohs.
But he has a drummer who stays in time and he also doesn't have to do vocals, so counting that in I'd say it's even ;)

^He also overdubs all the live DVDs.

Dude i´ve seen the man playing live, and i was like this :yow: as Marco said, his hand is a living machine, Hetfield dominates straight riffs, and some fast changes, but schaffer precision and speedness is out of this world. Oh and yeah iced earth overdubbed guitars in the DVD but if i recall correctly that was the other guitar player in solo parts.
