Last night's Opeth Concert NYC 7-17-03

And for Opeth, I moved upfront to stage left about 20-30 ft away and there weren't too many idiots there either...Just a couple of creaming Damnation fans and other Opeth fans who respected the Damnation material (I LOVED the Damnation songs, btw) and cheered mightility after each song.

Oh well, depends on location, I guess.

I was the tall kid with close cropped hair, Blackwater Park tour shirt on, standing directly stage center about 10 rows back the entire show. Just wanted to say that while location helped, the idiots last night were unavoidable. Everyone around me were Opeth fans, singing along, clapping, cheering and stuff, some were singing the lyrics with me... but damnit, you could hear the true idiots EVERYWHERE. They were just screaming the stupidest shit all night, especially noticeable during the lighter damnation tracks... ugh. Ah well, it was my third time seeing Opeth, and they still never cease to amaze. =D

I've been an Opeth fan since I was in 10th grade (pre-MAyH) and this was only the second time I've seen them. I'm glad I got to see a normal Opeth set first (Blackwater Park tour) but this was just as good, if not better and more moving. Seeing "To Bid you Farewell" was definitely the highlight of my night... perfect choice for the mellow set. I would have liked to hear one or two heavy songs but I really respect the fact that they are making this a total mellow tour. There definitely were plenty of morons at the show, as is usually the case with NYC metal shows... you have people that are just there for heaviness and have no interest in real music. I'm just glad the real fans outnumbered the boneheads... I loved it when the entire crowd yelled "SHUT THE FUCK UP" at the Nickelback dude (he was right above where I was standing). Also, great interaction between Mikael and the audience... he knows how to treat his fans. Porcupine Tree were mindblowing as I expected, and I can't wait to see them again either. Long live intelligent and sophisticated metal!

Show was great. Wasn't down front, so can't comment about the problem children, but overall the crowd was much more into it than at the Birch Hill for their heavy show 2 months ago. Best PT set I've seen to date.

Anyway, CAN SOMEONE PLEASE POST THE SETLIST? Thanks...

That's definitely one thing I noticed as well, about the crowd being into it. I saw them earlier in the year on the 'peth/Lacuna Coil tour in Buffalo, and the crowd was NUTS for that Opeth's set. I mean, yeah, it was the heavier material and it fuckin' kicked ass, but I didn't expect it. If possible with a softer set, the crowd was even more into it last night- great to see that the US Opeth fanbase is growing. \m/

I was the tall (6'3") fat guy with short dark hair and my new Dream Theater 2003 tour shirt. I was near the area where PT had packed their equipment after their show.

IDK, I really didn't see this crowd as any worse than usual for any show in NYC area. The 2 HUGE Damnation fans to my left were very supportive although they yelled sometimes dopey stuff...but nothing disrespectful. I heard a few wiseacres/dopes yell for harder stuff and the jerk that yelled the Nickelback comment.

Alas, I must be so used to the shit from certain crowds that I may just drown it all out while basking in the pleasure of listening and watching the great bands on stage...:)

Pet peeve: I think this has been alluded to in the last couple days but with the current up to date information on almost any touring bands and the access to the internet, there is no excuse for anyone not knowing that the set would be their "mellow" stuff. Who are these fools? Only excuse are "fans" with no computer access or AOL users ;)~ It is so easy to get this info off messageboards, the band's official website...reviews talking about latest album being softer than previous CD's...COme on...These people are so out of touch. We;ve known about this mellow tour since May. Plenty of time to look it up...OK, I'm done with my rant!

Hey man I saw you...u were up to the left of me. In front of John Wesely. I was the tall long hair dude screaming every Porcupine Tree song. I had my gf in front of me too. I definately saw you to the left of me, ahha cool shit. Dont even get me started on those fuckos in the front...I was gonna get that kid who practiclly fucking his gf in front me and toss his ass to the back, along with the fucktard sleeping on the monitor with his asian gf. The crowd was horribly rude last nite, and at least 80% of teh people there were dickhead retards who had no damn clue who PT were and acted incredibly disrespectful towards. I was just apalled and aggravated by some of the sheer idiots at that show...Ugh...Oh well.

Hellz yea i think i member seein ya, there were a few people behind me i remmber really into porcupine like me and my friend wit dreads, my friend wit the dreads loves even more and i gave him the set list haha but yea if we ever see that tall dork again, lets make fun of him or kill him lol and i know the couple ur talkin about. haha Believe me i go to a ton of shows early jsut to be up front and many of the people that are wit me just dont get into it, but instead use the barrier or stage just as a place to sleep or rest their arms. but i think opeth die hards like us should have a meeting sometime in the city lol the real life fan club lol

nice shirt!! a clockwork orange is my favorite movie of all time.
im going to see opeth in philly this sunday, the 20th, where do you go to get the pictures with them? or just wait near the tour bus?

I got there real early at like 4 o clock and at that place they park right infront the club so they got off the bus at like 5ish or 5:30ish and i asked for updated pic wit them. I think Pete looks like like Lemmy in the shot lol

I believe that its not the fans' fault that they might have been upset last night. All of my friends at the show last night which would were 5 or 6 people had no idea it was going to be a complete soft set list. I wouldn’t have known myself if it wasn’t for my extremely boring and uneventful office job that allows me to waste countless hours on message boards. If I didn’t have this job I would have been just as surprised. How can you blame people for not being part of a message board, or not checking a website. Think about it there are a couple hundred people on this board worldwide. There are also a couple hundred people at every opeth show in every state, every country. I believe opeth was rather smart in not making it completely obvious that this was going to be a mellow show only because when fans see opeth is playing they think of a normal opeth show and buy tickets. while half the people might not have gone knowing it was only slow stuff the other half are the people who would love to see a complete soft show and therefore opeth is treating them while still selling out their venue.

Why were people talking so fucking much? I'm just wondering because I thought it was rude towards the bands and the other people that actually wanted to listen to the damn music.

Anyway, both bands were great. ;)

Anyone want to post the PT setlist here? I'm unfamiliar with a few songs in the middle of their setlist.

Let me see:
-A couple hundred may be participants on any Opeth messageboards but there are plenty more lurkers who get info(I should know since I was one til recently)...or should!
-Websites about Opeth get a decent amount of hits for a band Opeth's size.
-Let's see : Band supporting ALL non-death metal album(Damnation)...MMM...Maybe there is chance that focus will be on mellow stuff.
-Hmmm...they are bringing a keyboardist...Oh,wait, I am too dumb or don't have 2 minutes to check the web.
-Hmmmm...I am big fan of band but can't read or NEVER read any articles about Opeth anywhere...on web or in mags wherew Mikael said that they were touring with all "mellow" stuff.
-Hmmmm...playing with a band like Porcupine Tree...Maybe it WON"T be as heavy as usual...maybe I should ask my friends who can read or have time to access pertinent websites about the deal.

Yes, I have high expectations for the human race especially Americans who can read English , which doesn't allow a cop-out that you can't understand.

And I like the word of mouth comment too after your post...That's how YOUR friends actually found out ,eh?

Finally, even if said individuals were suprised at setlist, all the songs(except the Deep Purple cover obviously) are part of band's catalogue so just enjoy the diversity of Opeth!

(Apologizing in advance for my obnoxiousness...)

i was really pissed at the people who keps yelling for heavy songs when steve wilson gave them the heads up that if they "were looking forward to a night of death metal madness" that they would be dissapointed. i was the young-looking guy with the reddish brown shaggy hair and a BWP shirt on. the guy next to me was getting stoned off his ass. it was really disrespectful.
