Merely calling Boldly Stride the Doomed a contender for album of the year (which it is) seems to cheapen the spirit herein. Argus isnt about claiming any title at any given point in time. They arent about being compared to legends of the past or present. They are simply about making fist-in-the-air heavy metal of the highest order, and here they succeed effortlessly with an album equally musical, emotionally-charged, and balls-out-rockin, but most importantly timeless. All in all progression is found on most fronts, and where it isnt the band is just as strong as they previously stood. Precision and top notch song writing is capped off with engaging lyrics delivered in great form from Pauls crushing fashion to guest appearances from both Anneke Van Giersbergen (The Gathering) and the legendary Dan Swanö (Edge of Sanity, Nightingale). Swanö is also responsible for the exceptional sound quality on this release, having mixed the album and seemingly has become the bands go to guy in the studio.
Aphotic is yet another great release for this group out of Chicago. Mastering the art of melancholy, yet offering a sense of empowerment to the listener. This album will please the bands current fan base while garnering the attention of first time listeners, as well as those that have passed over their previous efforts.
