Okay....in one of the threads here, Matt speaks highly of the Tube Screamer stomp. I was curious so I picked up an older Ibanez TS-9.
I HATE IT!!!! not the results I was hoping for. So noisy when i turn it on, my noise gate has trouble fighting the buzz. Maybe I'm doing something wrong???? I do not use the exact same set up as Matt...granted, but still YUCK!!! I set the TS9 as such. Gain:10-15%, Tone 50%, Level 50%.
I do currently use a power amp with two hairdryer sounding fans (hence the white noise) but still...without the TS-9 it's much quieter.

I'm guessing you need to experiment with it more. A huge amount of people use it. the first thing I'd try is using it less. So it has less of an effect on your sound, that way it will just tighten it up, rather then really changing it. Which is what you want it to do. Hope it works out!

And if you haven't already try this.

Drive 9 oclock
Tone 11 oclock
Level 12 o clock

Matt provided me with the most obvious solution via email.
Wrong order in the chain. TS before Pod...not after. deffinately a tighter bottom end. I can have a little more bass without the undesired boom or rumble. Nice.
Thanks for the tip Sinister....coincidentily, the settings you suggested are almost exactly what I already had it set to. I had less gain, 10 - 15% or 8o'clock. Tone 50% (noon but I may lower it a hair to try) and level 50% or noon. I like it now.....but what I hate...My power amp. I'll be much happier once Matts 5150 get's here. (yes $$$ is on the way:)
Nothing worse than turning on a power amp and hearing WHHHIIIIIRRRRRRR from the stupid fans. And the tone, no matter what you do, sounds very digital. As for the tube screamer...I dig it now.
