Linux, Reaper, and 2 Firepods

any you guys running this setup? Any performance and/or reliability differences between this and XP or Vista?

I've had a couple crashing while rendering (not too often but when it happens it sux) and rendering a 30+ track project can take a long time....even with my quad AMD.


Anyways, asking is anyone's running this setup....and if they'd recommend it. And is it easy to setup?

I tried the whole linux for audio deal, and as fast/crash free it was, it just wasn't all that great. I remember having an ass load of plugin problems, and getting the firepod to work was hell, and it could only partially work... That was a long time ago though, did they work all those issues out?

I haven't tried Reaper on Linux, the big issue has always been VST bullshit and I haven't had time to try new things for a while... I'll get into it eventually, as I can't think of a good reason why Linux couldn't be a great recording base system.

Sounds a lot like my own experience with a Linux audio setup, just not worth the hassel.
I spent months at it and ended up re-formatting and going back to XP, where I got everything setup ready to go in a few hours.

with linux theres issues with plugins, issues with hardware drivers, issues with restricted packages, compiling from source, Python, C++, G--, and all sorts of mad shit to contend with.

having said that, i use Linux for everything else except audio.

Linux is cool...but in my opinion it's usable only for programming/networking/server stuff. With Linux you understand much better how a computer works.
If you need productivity with graphics/music/video without the worries about drivers and what doesn't work.......Mac
I used windows for a life....also used linux for about 2-3 years....but after my switch to Mac if I have to choose a computer, it will be a Mac.
