I was wondering what you guys think would be a good wood, I was heavily considering quartered maple

And just doing a single sheet with the grain going across the guitar. The guitar is a basswood frankenstein Ibanez that I've been slowly working on for the past decade so trust me I'm not making it any worse by putting a veneer on it lol. Are there other woods that would take a stain better and have more of a 3d look when done in a natural finish than maple, I was going to do just tung oil since I already have some but after looking at some stained guitars I may change my mind.
