So, which is better? And we are talking about the original SW trilogy, not the wankified "special editions".

I picked Star Wars, LOTR is great, but its all set in one place and occasionally it takes itself a little TOO seriously. Plus SW was written from scratch whereas LOTR had 50 years of artwork and books to go from. SW also has cooler characters and lots of different races, and only one gay robot as opposed to an entire gay race.

Actually... Star Wars wasn't written from scratch, Lucas himself admitted that he stole alot of ideas for the story from Akira Kurasowa and his Samurai tales. Right down to the idea of the story using two unimportant little characters as the lynchpin.....

I vote for LOTR

Remember as well, Peter Jackson may have had 50 years of artwork and books to work from, but he also had 50 years of expectation to live up to. And he's managed to please 98% of those fans with what he has produced, and introduced many millions more to Tolkien's work. Lucas on the other hand couldn't even handle 15 years of pressure and produced the decidedly weak PT......

I say this though still loving Star Wars, I just like LOTR better :)

I know that, but inspiration from The Seven Samurai is hardly the same as having the entire world already fleshed out in art books and having the movies basically written already and only choosing what bits to leave out :)

But.... the real problem there is that the books as they are are virtually unfilmable. Hell, I wouldn't want to see a movie made just like the books.... 12 hours of walking, 3 of talking, maybe 5 minutes of action. No thanks! :p

1 word..... LOTR :headbang:

I love star wars (even episode 1 and 2), but NOTHING will ever live up to LOTR. I remember sitting in the theater on boxing day watching ROTK and when it was nearing the final battle scene, I thought to myself, "I will never see anything as huge as this again'.

The sheer scale of LOTR is unbelievable. Everything about it rocks. The story, the characters, the effects, the music, the sound effects, the costumes, the direction. Even the actors are all top notch and give freat performances.

Oh, and Gollum :headbang:

LOTR, because the LOTR trilogy doesn't consist of one great movie, one awesome movie and one average movie full of Muppets. It consists of one awesome movie, one great movie and one awesome movie.

I agree with pretty much everything Todd said. I believe Lucas himself has also said LOTR was another inspiration for SW. Much more loosley of course.

Another thing to think about, is that it doesn't matter which director had more work cut out for him etc, the question is which films are better.

I love both, but LOTR for me.

LOTR has too many boring bits I think... The battles are cool, but thats pretty much it, anything not involving a battle is a tad boring in LOTR.

Star Wars for sure. The Hobbit was always much more kickass than Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars has Luke Skywalker who is a King.

Return of the Jedi pwns it up.

But the Terminator trilogy destroys both.

Alot of people say stuff like that, but the battles aren't even my favourite parts of the films. The first film is probably my favourite of the three, and that doesn't even have battle scenes.
