Love of Live (part två)

It probably is since they're playing with Heidevolk (who also are Dutch).

Probably waaaaay too late now but I recommend you look Grimm up before the gig. All their stuff is great - the "Dark Medieval Folklore" and "Heksenkringen" records are solid as shit. Real folkmetal as it is supposed to sound. Not that finnish humpa-crap or anything like that. But their real gem is their last MCD "Ter Galge", which I think is outstanding folkmetal.

Grimm is a sadly underrated band and IMO one of the best folkmetal bands since Otyg.
hmm yeah it's way too late now obviously because the show was yesterday :p
i haven't heard any of their music before the show, and i must say it was completely different than what i have imagined... I thought it would be something similar to Otyg in style (i guess because of that tour with them), which wasn't the case at all... Honestly i wasn't very impressed but i believe they should sound much better on cd, i will have to check them out later...
As they were labeled Folk Metal om metal-archives.com, i expected something folky (folk metal in my book makes use of folk instruments. Grimm don't, and should probably be rather called Pagan Metal than Folk Metal... lastfm describes them even weirder "Avant garde occult pagan rock from The Netherlands"... hmm i wouldn't exactly call that rock...)

i don't think it's only a matter of stupidity. it's a matter of phisical endurance.
i've done thing when i was younger that now i'm not able to do anymore without dying

Haha indeed, I went to Dark Tranquillity's concert here with a 40 degree fever :p, and to the signing session the day before. I'm glad the guys didn't get sick because of me :p .

But that's nothing compared to what Erik Erna did :p , seriously that was very stupid I wonder how you survived. Teenage physical strength?

a little illness?
he has been puking all the day and all yesterday night...
it's not nice to be 300 kms far away from home, on the railway, with 39 degrees of temperature and have to stop the car every 5 minutes :zombie:

Sorry, it was only meant as a friendly tease ;)
Honestly, I can certainly relate to how shitty it feels to be ill when there's a show in town you're dying to see. Hope you're both feeling better by now, and that the next show will be a hit!

i'm not offended, be sure...no need to say "sorry" :)
i was only explaining it wasn't a little illness that stopped us.
if it was in my city i would probably have gone alone, but i didn't feel confortable to go alone in a city that i don't know well (and pretty big as Milano) and drive 3 hours back and then.
but a lot of things have happened lately made me understand that i have to think positive, so i know there will be another chance to see them live in the future :)

I was in Oslo, at Inferno this week and saw Taake, Deströyer666, Throne of Katarsis, Mistur, Ihsahn and Marduk.
Throne of Katarsis and Marduk was definitely the high points for me. I also saw some other bands, but didn't catch what they were.

i've risked the tragedy!
some friends of mine went to see alcest yesterday, and when they arrived at the place, the concert was sold out! :zombie:
fortunately they all live in the north so they didn't throw away too much time and money, but i imagine how fucking angry i could have been if this happened to me.....being the venue distant about 400 kilometers from my home....
well it's very strange this sold out, because alcest are not so known here, and the place is very distant from each kind of big towns, you have to drive a lot to reach it, it's very unconfortable to get there, plus it was easter, which is deeply felt here, families unite and eat together till late evening.
neither agalloch did sold out in that place...(which is quite narrow to be honest)

Nice! How were Ihsahn and Taake? Norsk Svart Metal! :headbang:

Good! But the way you put it, I seriously doubt it was sold out.

Ihsahn wasn't high on my priorities so, yes I got drunk. Instead of seeing The Kovenant me and my buddies were taking it easy with Gaahl, his boyfriend and a couple of guys we met in Oslo.

as mentioned before, on april 1st i was at Opeth 20th Anniversary concert @ Essen, DE. They played an almost 3 hour long set consisting on 2 parts: 1st the entire Blackwater Park album, and then after a break another set consisting of 1 track from every album.

It was a seated venue in a cinema theater, we all had a reserved seat which was pretty annoying. When Opeth started to play people were still walking around in the darkness between the rows looking for their seats, thanks to which the first The Leper Affinity was pretty much lost on me... It was also extremely weird and frustrating having to sit during such an exciting and loud event, you could just feel the entire row of seats swinging back and forth because of all those sitting headbanging people :loco: Our places were also quite far from the stage, and my eyesight is pretty poor, and so is my camera's zooming ability... This is my greatest complaint of the whole evening: i wanted to see Mikael close so badly, but i couldn't even walk up to the stage because the narrow opening between the rows was quickly filled with desperate fans who also didn't want to stay seated...

The sound was great, even if it seemed they blew the right side speakers during the 1st or 2nd track! You could hear that during the quieter/slower parts that it was cracking on the low bass tones. Anyway, even that seemed like a minor disturbance to me...

During the first set Mikael almost didn't say a word at all. They just played on, and it was awesome!!! :worship:notworthyI fimled my fav. Harvest, The Drapery Falls and Blackwater Park, but the latter was almost 12 min. long so youtube wouldn't let me upload it

After a 10 min. break there was a second set. During this set Mikael was his usual self, and talked much between the songs :) He said, among other things, that Dan Swanö was sitting there in the audience (we saw him walking outside after the concert!), and that after Opeth are done with this Anniversary tour they would start working on the new album and will come back touring next year probably! :headbang::kickass:That was great news, at least if we can trust Mikael on that ('cause he likes talking shit during the show!)

The second set looked like this:

Forest Of October
Advent
April Ethereal
The Moor
Wreath
Hope Leaves
Reverie/Harlequin Forest
The Lotus Eater

Mikael said that The Moor was probably their most challenging track to play live and that they haven't played it live much (if at all?)
Harlequin Forest being one of my most fav Opeth tracks, was my personal highlight of the evening!! It was terrific! :worship:rock: Unfortunately my memory card was full and i didn't film the entire song, but here's what i got:

it's a pity the brilliant drums kind-of-solo at the end didn't fit on the film

At the end the band was totally exaughsted after playing almost 3 hours so they didn't get out in the hall to chat with the fans... I only can hope this was not the last time i ever saw them and hope to see them on a "normal" metal gig where i can stand up front, and to meet Mikael in person one day too...

A friend of mine who has seen them that day for the 4th time said it was the best performance ever and absolutely mind-blowing! I agree, even if i had nothing to compare it to! It is now the second best metal concert i have ever witnessed!

How much did you tape? I'd love to watch the whole show.. And that's one of my favorite Opeth tracks, too! SO GOOD. Also, I tried to get into this show but by the time I found out about it was all but sold out and I couldn't find any decent tickets so I passed. Plus, I couldn't get an interview with the band. :( Fucking Roadrunner are fascists.

yep it was sold out pretty quickly! Even the V.I.P. tickets for 156 euro! o_O
i only filmed these 3 that i posted, and Blackwater Park which i cannot upload on youtube because of the time limit of 10 min per video. I wish i filmed it all but i went with an empty memory card and it was already full after 4 long tracks... i need a bigger one... :(

It seems like I'll open the show for R. Kotzen on may.

About Opeth setlist: it's one of the best that they've ever played. I would replaced harlequin forest and the lotus eater with Godhead's Lament and Demon of the Fall/The Amen Corner.

I'm more into Opeth lately, but just with Orchid, MAYH and SL. I can't dig so much their efforts since BWP tho - Deliverance is well written but it sounds too polished, thus it lacks soul IMO.

Weren't you in an Opeth cover band a couple years ago?

I still love Opeth through BWP. Since then they've had their spotty moments. I think that Damnation is great, but Deliverance is weak. I think that Ghost Reveries is godly, but don't like Watershed at all. But everything up to BWP is perfect.

That said, they're still probably my favorite band ever, tied with Iron Maiden of course.

I played as 'guest' just cause the guys were my friends. I still know how to play 90% of Opeth's entire discography on bass and 40% on guitars, also I did backing vocals. There are some vids on YT.

I was asked to rejoin them 3 days ago, for a show late on this month. The setlist seems ok, tell me what do u think about this:

Harvest
Forest of October (or In Mist She Was Standing)
Advent
The Drapery Falls (or Bleak)
Deliverance
When
Godhead's Lament
Demon of the Fall

If we can play more, this will be added:
The Moor
Master's Apprentices and/or The Baying of the Hounds.

That's a great setlist. I'd go see that.. Still think Demon of the Fall is overrated.

You know, I've never sat down and tried to learn Opeth songs except for learning the bass part to The Drapery Falls a while back. I probably shouldn't because otherwise my music will just get MORE Opethy and that is the last thing I need. I get accused of sounding too much like Opeth as it is, and I don't think my stuff really does.. But what do you do?

I'm not and I wont ever be an Opeth fan. Even if I know how to play too many Opeth songs, they are not an influence for my music at all. On life happens a lot that when you learn something too deeply, it lose its appeal; like the magic tricks, most people enjoys the result but they don't wanna know how it was made. You can say the same with meat products.
