Quad Dual Cores? I think I heard Intel was hoping to have something ready the first quarter 2007.

it is out now. It´s called intel core 2 duo extreme. It is a quad just like the xeons. Anyway, the difference between xeons and core 2 duo is the front side bus so apple chose well. everything is called CORE now , what a bloody hell ..hard to figure out what we´re refering to

Get a similarly configured PC and you're looking at the same cost or more. I have no idea where you're getting the $18,481 figure either... Check out the configuration I just put in:

$17,134.00
Two 3.0 GHz Dual Xeons (Quad, so we're talking 12 GHz overall)
2 Terabytes hard disk storage
16 gigs RAM
NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 card (the best video card on the market)
TWO 30" Apple Cinema Displays
2 SuperDrives (optical)
BlueTooth, AirPort Extreme, Fibre Channel (anyone here use Fibre Channel? thought not...)
Wireless Keyboard and Mighty Mouse
AppleCare protection for all of the above.
I've never seen a system with specs like that, anywhere. That's so much power it's ridiculous. Of course it costs that much!

Case with touchscreen
Liquid Cooled
More Hard Drive Space
Two OS's
Gyration Mouse and Keyboard
2 Blu-Ray Burners
2.25 Terabytes of HDD space

All for $200+ less. Some of the shit is overkill.

You're always going to save a little dough when you build your own PC. And you also can save money similarly by buying a bare-bones Mac Pro tower and adding these same parts after-market (which is insanely easy to do thanks to the awesome case design.) I've after-market upgraded every Mac I've owned, as you save a little bit of money doing that vs. the Apple Store.

Still, Apple's prices are much better than Dell or other PC makers.

also, you get a ton of pretty cool free software like iLife.

Dell has went into the shitter. Along with all the other major PC makers.

Be honest, how is Mac support. Please, no sugar coating.

I haven't had the occasion to deal with them myself, as my Macs have all been rock solid, but I have had some friends/family who've had to.

Most of the problems people encounter are in the first 90 days, and are almost always covered by some sort of recall, etc. (bad screen, motherboard, etc.) Turnaround is quick. My dad's had a couple of different Mac laptops over the years that had issues like this, was no big deal and the problems were fixed free/fast.

I knew one girl whose flat-panel iMac G4 had a dead pixel (which she hadn't discovered for 4 or 5 months.) The manufacturer of the iMac screen at that time was Toshiba, who would allow any monitor to leave the factory as long as it had fewer than 13 dead pixels (ridiculous policy), which is what Apple Support first told her. She didn't have AppleCare, but was able to get the screen replaced for free (out of warranty by a couple of months!) after having her tech support call escalated a couple of steps. Basically, if you bitch enough, they will make you happy most of the time.

That all being said, it's worth investing in an AppleCare subscription because Apple will do just about anything for you at that point.

Heh, I was thinking that when I typed. I was talking about a computer with 4 dual core processors.

Know where you can get a decent deal on a barebones system? And I'd never pay Apple Store prices, I mean, they're insane for what they charge for RAM.

so you didn´t get mac ram ? A similar ddr2 also works right ?

ddr2 is ddr2, just don't buy anything that's not name-brand or you will have problems down the road, and make sure to install ram in matched pairs. That's true whether you're on a Mac or a PC though, in my experience.
