Seriously... Went to track drums at a quarter million dollar studio, two songs left and poof there goes his G5... power supply shit out on it and now we have to wait a week for mac to fix it... wouldn't have had this problem if it were a pc :p coulda had it fixed in a half hour.

Stupid macs. FML.

If it's a G5, it's out of warranty, even if he got extended Apple Care. So beyond that, the joke is on you because you could easily get a replacement power supply and do it yourself. Why do people think you can't "work" on Macs...

Sorry to hear this. The mobo failed on my macbook pro and it took 48 hours from the moment it failed to the moment apple had it repaired and back in my hands so I'm really surprised about the time frame though.

Its something that has hanged on since the earlier Macs, which where very hard to find spare parts to compared to the pc.

Right, because nobody has ever had any problems with a PC at a studio, either.

You're working on a machine that's at least 5-6 years old, and you're wondering why you can't get replacement parts quickly? Try replacing the PSU on a PC from that long ago, and you'd probably have to order it online to get the mobo sockets right.

Then again, a PC from 5-6 years ago would probably be a Pentium 4 or some shit, and you'd have more than just PSU issues on your hands.

I realize pc's have problems it just sucks that with mac's it's not as easy as on a pc to just swap out a power supply because they make parts so damn specific so that they can over-charge and make you have to deal through them... and on top of that there is only one mac store for hours here and it's still far away. I'd be totally into mac if they'd decide to become more flexible like pc's in their maintenance and parts department

You do realize that their inflexibility in their parts and maintenance is a huge part of their stability and service?

I'm not 100% pro-Mac - I really think Steve Jobs is an insanely tyrannical and oddly button-phobic CEO, and I have a lot of qualms with the huge gaps in their product lines and hate paying so much for them, but I think most will agree that if you use Mac for longer than a project or two, going back to Windows will be a huge pain in the ass.

Haha awesome.

Back on topic, it's an old computer. If they invested a quarter mil in it they should be able to afford a new computer, the livelihood of their business seems to depend on such an upgrade. (especially in this day and age when so many studios are dropping like flies)

Well I asked the same question and he explained that it's not as simple as that as they are running PT HD3 and the cards in the mac would become useless with a computer upgrade and as digidesign does odder trade in value its still alot of money and then a new $3-4k mac just became a $10k+ upgrade and I don't care how much you make that's alot of scratch to just pull out lol so I think just replacing a power supply is the smartest option time being lol

Yeah. The studio I intern at is in a similar boat. They have G5's and HD3 rigs in both rooms. The upgrade process would be a pain in the ass, but the systems still work. They have a few spare G5s to take parts from if anything does go wrong in one or both of the main machines. Not the greatest backup plan, but I can definitely see the hassle of having to get brand new core & accel cards or an extension chassis and a computer.

That's true but you could have 2 G5's or even run your sessions off an LE rig in a pinch. You can easily find a used g5 for $500 these days. Given that, they'd be wise to keep one around as a sub or as a parts donor.

I'm amazed that a "quarter million dollar studio" was still using their G5's. In fact, I'm amazed that anyone is still using those pieces of shit. They're the Apple version of a Pentium 4 - ie.... completely fucking gash in any situation.

Actually, if you run all your effects outboard, its not any problem running with it at all.. but i still dont really get why when they seem to have that kind of money. D;

I dunno.. they charge $50 an hour minimum and are booked up solid so I don't get it either
