Manilla Fucking Road

I really liked Voyager. I've heard 5 albums so far, and Crystal Logic is my favorite.

Just picked up Crystal Logic and it is obviouisly just about a perfect record. The Riddle Master having one of the best vocal performances ever!

I guess I need to listen to Voyager again, I didn't hear these Country influences that Swizzlenuts has in his review or now these death metal sounds it has =/

I'd say his voice is best on Mystification, and I would say it's perfect but it does kind of have the most acceptable sound and there's a few tracks on there that don't fit. I dont see how open the gates isn't better

So do all their post reformation albums have a death metal influence like Voyager? That really caught me off-guard when I first listened to it yesterday and it was :kickass:
Are you referring to the very brief harsh vocals in Butchers of the Sea? I wouldn't really call it a death metal influence. It's a great CD, but I could do without the slow songs.

There are occasional static and dissonant musical passages that may remind one of death metal, but firstly, given the context in which it is implemented, it clearly has no relation to death metal, and secondly, these techniques are hardly new to traditionally oriented metal. Frankly, I consider the claiming of 'death metal influence' in newer Manilla Road material a bit silly.

I think you're wrong tbh. How does something like the groovy riff in Butchers of the Sea not remind you of death metal as a musical style? I don't care about it having a "relation to death metal" on any other level other than sound-wise, tbh. It sounds like death metal some of the time. I don't think influence is the correct word if I get what you mean (that Mark is not going "hey I like death metal time to throw some in"), but I think there are parts that sound very much like OSDM (heavy, grooving chug riffs with minor key melodies and dissonance as you mentioned). Also recommend me more old heavy metal with death metal sounding sections, as that should be cool to hear (not being sarcastic, I really do want to hear more since it's kewl here).

Also, I kinda disagree on country influences, as I feel that sorta cheapens Tree of Life, but it's definitely a little different...like a heavy acoustic folk song or something.

It is the best metal album of the year so far, Steve Von Till's A Grave is a Grim Horse and Dead Meadow's Old Growth are the two albums better than it.
