Mar De Grises - The Tatterdemalion Express

So yeah, this album just gets better with each listen.

If there are 120 seconds that seal this in my top 3, it's 6:00m - 8:00m of "To See Saturn Fall". Hair raising stuff......put everything aside and just give up 120 seconds of your life to see what I'm talking about.....I hear that and I think "album of the year".

Possibly. :D

OK, Mar De Grises has obviously heard Arcane Sun. If not, then somehow there are telepathic channels from Ireland to Chile.

I need to read their interviews to see if they mention it.

BTW, this album rules, but it may take a lot of time (like Arcane Sun did). Thanks for the recommendation.

Yeah, I figured it would be nigh impossible for J to dislike this album. Beautiful piano, mournful doom, and splashes of dynamic riffing.

Again, the last two minutes of track #2 is what makes life worth living, and the rest of the album is almost equally as exceptional making it....top 3 material.

Certainly the best debut of the year.

Yeah now I really need Arcane Sun.

Also I need to spend more time with Mar de Grises, it's a little hard to listen to because you have to really be in the right mood to enjoy it.

Yeah, that's how it appears at the beginning, because primarily all you hear is lots of slow funeral doom type material, but then after a while, the album has an ability to suck you in. And then you realize there is much more going on than what you initially thought....it's a bit weird to explain. It's just an album that keeps unfolding with each listen, but you have to motivate yourself to listen to it.

It's funny because people are hearing Arcane Sun, or Tiamat, but I'm also hearing Chopin. The ongoing piano work is what keeps the album truly alive.

Of course it does require a bit more attention than the average release, since it's so deep, but I've put away all non-2004 albums for now because the year end is fast approaching, so I'm only focusing on '04 albums to get a solid top 10 list together.

I think this is an album we'll be talking about for a while.....

HOLY SHIT I'M SIGNED INTO THE WRONG ACCOUNT.

The album gave me chills when I first heard it, and that one Saturn song had a riff stuck in my head so I know it's gold. Just a matter of getting to it, I haven't really been in the mood for deep introspective stuff for awhile now. It may not grab me by the sack until the year is over, I dunno.

The real NAD

I think that's pushing it a bit far... o_O

Yeah, great album though. The weird experimentalism on track 2 is what grabbed my attention on first listen. It's not often that these sort of doomish bands experiment much further than keyboards/piano/violin/etc., but this one contains the genuine sort of ambitiousness that generally gives me a stiffy. It will be tough to keep this out of the to 10, but we shall see...
