Yeah, pretty much any solid state amp on it's own effects/distortion blows. Hope that answers your question.

my fellow guitarist has one, his is loud enough, and it does what we need with it, so i dont see anything wrong with it. i just took my Marshall AVT50 and put the line out into a cab. it works nicely and is loud as fuck. i enjoy it!

I have an AVT150, combo, and with no other pedals driving it, the tone is pure shit when it comes to distortion, with a considerable clean tone. It is loud as fuck, but that's not the first thing Im looking for in a guitar amplifier.

id just like to say that the tone is definately not pure shit in distortion. you just gotta set the knobs to what you like. thats how you get a good sound.

I use one . I have to agree that the combos fucking suck , but the head is definitely pretty good for the money . But , you have to consider the fact that pretty much EVERYTHING contributes to your tone , even what your cabinet is on . and if you have shitty speakers , you're unlikely to get an amazing tone . Same with pickups , which is why I'm getting EMGs , haha .

An amp should sound reasonably good with any moderate gear. Good amps don't need pedals or gain boosting to have great distortion.

Personally I don't like any of the Marshall stuff, though the JCM800's are good if you mod them out.

To each, their own though... lol
