I'm with ya Gugs. If I'm going out of the U.S. I'm probably going for the people and culture (though scenery is a huge plus). Honestly, I've almost never seen landscape pictures of other counties and go apeshit over it. The U.S. has an amazing variety and many locations comparible to more exotic locales landscape wise. If I wanted to see a cool landscape, I could stay in the U.S. and see it a lot cheaper. I like to travel abroad for other reasons. Therefore, Iceland isn't exactly high on my list.

THANK FUCKING GOD SOMEONE SEES THINGS MY WAY

Australia's the same: we have beaches, deserts, rainforests and bushland all in the one fucking state! Culture is the main thing I would travel for, but I love a nice landscape, also.

Personally, its not just scenery that makes me want to visit Iceland. Historical importance, culture, heritage, all these things play a factor for me. I studied the land and the history for a good while too.

Righto, plus my friend really wanted to go there.

To clear things up: Basically our day trip to Belgium will consist of beer and food. That's it, and we know it.

I agree that scenery wise, the breadth of the american experience is hard to equal. that said, we lack certain things, such as where many historical things took place ~ I mean, maybe its just me, but I can get the chills off the historical ambience of a place.

You know, I'm also sick & fucking tired of this as well (not you, liz).

Fine, the U.S. isn't 14 bajillion years old, woopty fucking do.

There are over 400 years of history in this land as well. Not exactly a drop in the bucket.

Yea thats another thing people bitch about, the relatively small amount of history in comparison with many Euro nations. I think the US has managed to cram a good deal of history in those 400 odd years. I will say too, camping in Valley Forge in the middle of Febuary during a blizzard was one of the best weekends I ever had.

I travel for history, not scenery. Gugs is right -- if you live in America, you can go places that easily rank alongside anywhere else in terms of scenery. And if you want a volcano, you can go to Hawaii. :loco:

I think history adds a great deal to wherever you visit. For example, living in the UK you see lots of history etc, but relatively speaking, it still doesn't come close to places like Egypt. Medieval castles etc are like 10 minutes old compared to the Valley of the Kings or obviously Saqqara.

Then you come to the US, haha. Sure, the scenery in the USA is breathtaking, but history.... nah. At some point, you find yourself comparing 18th century to 2700 BC.

All depends on what floats your boat.

Another cool historical memory I have is standing in an ancient Irish burial mound that was 2000 years older than the oldest dated pyramids. The design and care in the construction was mind boggiling.
