Melody "stolen" (no offense) from "Mad Onion's 3D Benchmark 2003"

well, check forums such as d12world or even, without going into the hip-hop category, some parts of fanfiction.net... people speak like that as a rule, or rool, or whatever. :p

And the news is: No one cares as long as it's well done
As long as you're talking about just a riff, then sure in most cases. When it gets to entire songs, I have to disagree. :p

Ooh, looks like the entire board got up on the wrong side of the bed today.
Fuck off, no we didn't.

my two cents: magsec technically was offensive towards the newbie. okay, we know him and we know that he is often faking ghetto language, and therefore has to be joking this time as well. but there's people on several online boards who adopt that register as a type of "netspeak" and they're dead serious, besides dead stupid. so the newbie might have assumed that mags was serious, and i don't blame him (the newbie) for not reading all the remaining threads in order to ascertain whether he was being insulted or not.

Who gives a flying fuck what the newbie does, it's a newbie.

Hey guys, sorry for taking that dude serious. English isnt my mother tongue and thats why I didnt get the humor in it. Not everybody is a perfect english speaker. Thats also why I used the word "stolen". I wanted to edit the post, and change it into "taken", but then the board was down due to board maintnence (doh). Smileys break the language barrier, and thats the only reason why I approve them. They indeed make sense, when used correctly.

So if I put it in quotes and add "no offense" to it, well, I just find it amazing that there are STILL people coming along and presume I wanna call s.o. a thief.
Reminds me of southpark, where the hunter guy is shooting at everything approaching him, with the justification that it approached him, knowing for sure it didnt wanna hurt him. Same way mightiest man(so they say) of the world behaves :p

Anyway, back to topic: I will look the songs up and post em if i can find it.

Oh, and me being a n00b to this board doesnt mean anything, except that I wasted less time of my life than others :p (Lets hope nobody takes that serious)

wow

Sure, and I think in Norther's case it went too far already because the stole the tempo and arrangement along with the riff, while in CoB's case I think it's more like a quote, or a tribute to Carcass than a ripoff, it's just too obvious.

welcome to the board Dreaper, what a way to make an entrance :p

so eventually they get flamed and people imagine the regulars here can't take any criticism addressed to their favorite band....

how true

As far as similarities are concerned, a powermetal fan once told me that Sentenced's "Nepenthe" is a ripoff of Bathory's "Under the Runes". The similarities are there..

As a reply to the original topic:

Yes, several members of the band are gamers and interested in many things computery. It is very likely that some of them are familiar with 3D Benchmark.

Yes, the band has always supported "creative borrowing" when it comes to music, as long as it is made tastefully and with results that are interesting in their own and not just stupid copies of the original. I remember how some people asked, if they could borrow a line from DT-lyrics and the reply the band gave was 100% positive. Also, note the quoted part in Hedon.

Combining the above two, yes, it is possible that the band did this intentionally and created something new by using an old melody. I don't see anything wrong in it, quite the contrary. Then again, it is possible that it was completely unintentional - some bandmember just had that melody in his head and didn't realize where it was from. Happens all the time I suppose.

Finally, I can clearly hear the melody-line from a very old Sega Genesis / Mega Drive game called Phantasy Star IV in another Character song.

Hey! World is full of similar band´s, so its not a big surprise that some of them sounds similar too, like COB and Norther, or In Flames and Soilwork! Like in these cases they are from same country and know each other well...i know, that still doesn´t make it right to rip off riffs or anything else from another band, but like in COB and Norther´s case, i just dont even care, cause they both sound good and thats enough for me...

Hmmm...im not quite sure what was i suppose to mean with this msg... i had somekind of thought when i started writing this... ;)

I agree, with the above stated things about "creative and tasteful - rip off" I think it also quite interesting to share such observations:

As far as i know, DT also got some computer-game based inspiration for lyrics of punish my heaven. i did not notice it myself, in fact it was discussed here a long time ago but maybe most of u dont remember. some of the punish my heaven lyrics are supposed to be inspired by riddles the game "conquests of the longbow". i only played that game in the german version, therefore i dont know much about that.

off-topic: does anyone know the dimmu song sorgenskammer? it is really a total rip-off of a computer game melody. anyone who has heard both versions can tell that both tunes are almost 100% the same.

panteras "shedding skin" main riff is very similar to metallicas "jump in the fire".

Uh, no - I'm pretty sure we found out that the original source of those lines was some piece of literature, from which both DT and the creators of the game most likely got their inspiration. Thus, it wasn't a direct quote from the game, but a quote from the same source the game creators used.

And speaking of Pantera and games, a melody from "This Love" is used on Doom 2.

Oh sorry, i did not want to spread wrong info about our favourite band. Thanks for clearing this up.

people take so much offense when theres a chance their favorite band isnt 100% origional.... some of you need to mellow out

i think its an interesting topic and would like to know where I could hear this 3D Benchmark theme....
