What year did it start?

...and with which bands?

For modern retro thrash i would point to Municipal Waste in the early 2000's (2001-2003ish). For modern OSDM I would say around 2008 or 9 at the earliest with Entrails. Specifically modern OSDM not modern death metal of course

I'd argue that it always persisted in the underground with the likes of Pentacle, Sadistic Intent, Deteriorot and Mortem, but the revival definitely began before 2008 with bands like Repugnant, Slugathor, Deathevokation, Kaamos, etc.

Very well, I'll admit i'm not as knowledgeable in this subgenre. Looks like I have some listening to do. Those all sound like OSDM?

And I'd also say the thrash revival started before Municipal Waste, they were just the band that popularized it. I remember finding a shitload of new thrash bands on Myspace around even earlier, like Dekapitator and FKU.

@Baroque you should definitely check out the latest mortem. i'm a little bored of retro DM on the whole but that thing is pretty canon-worthy, it's like the last quarter century never happened.

Old school Swedish death metal mostly. Check out Pentacle for something more along the lines of classic Pestilence.

It kind of relies on there being a revival. And since there were multiple bands that formed in the late-90s/early-00s and had an actual presence then I'd say it was a revival.

For me, the whole OSDM revival thing exploded around 2008-09 when Dead Congregation, Funebrarum, and Ignivomous were establishing themselves.

??? at least on the part of thrash, it pretty much died in the mid late 90's. it's difficult to find even 1 or 2 good albums per year in like '96 to '99

Nothing ever dies in the underground, but I guess there was a revival in that you could again get signed to a major label and become popular by playing thrash metal.
