It's tough to know unless you were there. My band's first three records were nickel XL's.
Edit: actually I'm not even sure about that. haha. The last one may have been pro-steels.

Steel strings sound bright/wiry on their own. Nickels have more of a smooth lower-mid/high-bass region.

You're right, it's hard to tell them apart in a mix. But they do make a world of difference.
