Metal covers that are just as good as the original

Iced Earth - Iron Maiden cover for sure.

I can't believe this hasn't come up yet! It's actually better than the original, imo.

I doubt many people here like them, but they covered this song brilliantly. It's just as depressing as the original!

Love the original, love the cover equally.

Pantera covers, always a solid choice if you don't suck.

I'm not sure how FFDP got as popular as they are. I don't not like them, but I didn't expect so many people to be such rabid fans. This cover is pretty damned well done.

I could drag up a ton more. Like basically the entirety of Fozzy's self-titled album. And most of the covers on DT's A Change of Seasons.

I'm shocked by two things. One, that ALL THAT REMAINS covered Nevermore (Holy shit when was this?!?!), and two, that you actually think this autotuned disaster is as good as the original. :D Oh well.

Epica: Crystal Mountain. Seen live on the ProgPower stage. They better whip out another Death cover next year too! (They'll have enough time for it!)

This is another one that has me scratching my head. You seriously consider this as good as the original? Really? I'm not a fan of Epica, so my opinion of them is a moot point in general, but their cover I thought was absolutely lame and completely failed to capture the psychadelic vibe of the original track while turning it into some sort of opera metal tune (again this isn't a slight on Epica so much as it is taking a song that I personally don't think ever would benefit from a power metal treatment and giving it one -- what's next? Nightwish covering Altars of Madness? A B-side of After Forever covering Left Hand Path?). And before I get shit for that comment, I'm a big fan of Bal Sagoth - the difference between the two bands for the most part is the vocals. I think if Bal Sagoth did Crystal Mountain the way Epica did it I'd hate it just as much. To my ears, the band neither made the song their own (you can tell that it doesn't exactly fit with what they play at all), nor serviced it well. I'm sure from a band standpoint, you can't fault bros for having fun and covering a tune they enjoy, but as a fan I would def. not rank it near as good as the origional. But to each his own! <3

edit: the context of my opinion of that Epica cover is from a studio recording I found on Youtube years ago, and not a live version at PP. Maybe it's better live?

for sure. Actually to be fair I probably would've loved it alot more if their og clean singer (their old bassist) sung on it and not Phil whose vocals sound soooo fake in the studio.

Godhead, "Eleanor Rigby." I couldn't find a video version of their first version of it from the album Power Tool Stigmata, only the second (and IMHO inferior) version from a later CD, so here's the first one.

I'm biased since I'm friends with them, but I've always thought that cover was great.

This one simply on the vocal additions that Devin adds to this song. Musically, it's not better but Devin kills it that when i see Rush performing it hear Devin's parts. hahaha.

Hell, when I saw Rush play it live, I SANG along like Devy did.

My favorites include:
Cradle of Filth's version of Hallowed Be Thy Name
Therion doing Seawinds
Epica doing Fear Factory's Replica (I was shocked to hear this when I bought the album)

Yep to those 3!

I originally thought we were just talking about metal bands doing metal covers. For me, tho, the best cover is a metal band doing a non-metal cover.

The Gathering - In Power We Entrust The Love Advocated

Yesss....of course, Dead Can Dance are pretty much on a pinnacle all their own. Regarding DCD covers, the Calif. goth/rock band The Last Dance did a great version of "Spirit" that measures up well with the original, IMHO.

What are your thoughts on this one brah? I think it's just as cheap sounding from a production standpoint as the ATR track, but idk, I am lovin' this cover!

Yeah, I pretty much agree with you point for point on this one. I'm very entertained by it. The thing about covers, imo, is that they don't have to be super polished, they mostly just need to be fun.

Also, I can't believe I missed this one, probably my favorite metal cover ever. So much better than the original, imo.

It's like they put in all of the heaviness that was kind of implied in the original version.

Alien Ant Farm doing "Smooth Criminal" - one of my favorite covers.

AWWWW YEAAAH I love that cover. That's the only MJ cover I'd ever dare say is as cool as the original.

But holy shit... vneck sweater or oversized t shirt over buttondown flannel, huge-ass baggy pants. 2001 fashion sucked. I miss the attitude though. Huge party going on in the background, solid bros doing random shit - having a good time, no nerds allowed!
