Ever since I've gotten into metal, it's been a part of my life that I had kept hidden from my parents. But in recent months, I've opened up a little and now they are aware that I listen to metal. They claim I never share my music with them, but I don't because I fear a negative impression will make them think less of me.

So I decided to send each of them a CD, each with 8 songs that give an honestly comprehensive sampling of my tastes, but also appeals to each of their own musical tastes, at least to some degree. I will write a page for each CD explaining the songs, their conventions, and their appealing elements.

First, for my father, the classical music enthusiast and pipe organist, I will give him an assortment of symphonic/synth-driven black metal. I'll have to warn him/explain the heaviness and vocals, but besides that, the music could be potentially agreeable to him.

Limbonic Art - In Abhorrence Dementia
Summoning - The Passing of Grey Company
Satyricon - Dark Medieval Times
Covenant - From the Storm of Shadows
Nokturnal Mortum - Perun's Celestial Silver
Burzum - Dunkelheit
Alatyr - Hviezdy
Borknagar - The Winterway

For my mother, things will be easier, because she likes a lot of classic rock. I'll provide her with a glimpse at my classic metal side. The Rammstein track is there because she's a German scholar. And the Opeth track is sans growls but still with heavy guitars in the latter half.

Mercyful Fate - Evil
Iron Maiden - Can I Play With Madness
Pentagram - Broken Vows
Opeth - Face of Melinda
Black Sabbath - Hand of Doom
Metallica - Fade to Black
Judas Priest - You've Got Another Thing Comin'
Rammstein - Nebel

So what I'm asking from you guys is your approval of these playlists, and how I should go about justifying my musical interests. Keep in mind my parents are Catholics, but I think they know me enough to trust that the music has not affected my faith (as much as my logic has).

This is going to be tough, but it will be a weight off my shoulders once I've sent it off and heard their thoughts. I plan to mail these to them because I feel too awkward playing it in front of them.

I got some of my non-metal friends into old school thrash and traditional doom.

I turned my brother onto old school swedish death metal.

as far as those lists go, I can't complain. good luck, though.

I'm not trying to convert them to metal, I just want to give them an idea of what I like without "scaring" them.
Those look good, although I would've picked Det Som Engang Var instead of Dunkelheit. Your mom may possibly enjoy some of Nachtmystium's lighter material. My mom did.

I picked Dunkelheit because the vocals are less harsh. And Nachtmystium is too heavy/murky for my mother.

And I didn't pick Jesus' Tod because of the title.

Can I Play With Madness is a good pick. I would have chosen The Evil That Men Do personally.

This is actually a good idea. I think this would only work with my dad though since he likes heavier classic rock.

My mom and dad never really minded. Mind you these are Catholics just like me. My mom jokes about Fenriz and even finds him funny. Both my parents bought me the new Peste Noire and support me with gift cards for music. Than again I have never been a "metalhead" so to speak. My friends are much more critical though.

Looks good. I would switch the Satyricon song to one off of one of the later albums because that song is strange.

And my dad likes a lot of power metal. He prefers well written songs so that's really the only genre he'll ever like.

It's the medieval sound that I'm hoping appeals to my father. The flutes, the acoustic guitars and the pipe-organ-esque riff in the middle of the song may very well impress him.

so you're dad is gay? :goggly:

The lists look good to me.

My mother hates anything I listen to, but then again, she doesn't like any music at all. (Even though she saw BLACK SABBATH and Blue Oyster Cult live) Ass.

Anyways I'll try to have those pages typed up sometime tomorrow and I'll mail them shortly thereafter. Thanks for all the input so far.

You could've put some Emperor in there for your Dad as well, all the Anthems songs don't have anti-religious or Satanic song titles.

I second the Burzum. even if you have just the slightest appreciation for classical composition, Burzum's ambient material will do the trick.
