Metal for the Parents

You could've put some Emperor in there for your Dad as well, all the Anthems songs don't have anti-religious or Satanic song titles.
Too overwhelming. He wouldn't be able to discern anything.
If you have any, he might find some of the ambient Burzum stuff enjoyable
Good recommendation, but not metal.
Burzum's vocals (on the first three albums) are bound to scare someone with an untrained ear for those type of vocals.
That's why I chose "Dunkelheit".
How about some power metal for your dad?

I don't like power metal, so making my father think I like power metal would be lying to him. I'm giving them all stuff I like, not what they might like (unless I like it too).

I appreciate all the help with this list. I may consider switching the Sabbath song to something more upbeat and classic rock-ish.

First of all, I think this thread is more appropriate for the social forum.

Secondly, I think that the worst thing you can do is to try to 'conceal' your musical preferences. My parents are religious too, and maybe they're not completely happy with what I listen to, but they understand its importance to me and respect it (of course, they also like the occasional Sabbath and Priest stuff too). Just yesterday I was showing my mother the artwork for the gatefold Nocturnal Graves LP. She just said "Oh, that's nice, where'd you get it" and moved on. If your parents can't do that, then I feel sorry for you. Your parents should be confident enough in your ability to differentiate between fiction and reality and to not be influenced by the fiction.

Finally, the song is called Burzum, not Dunkelheit.

"The "Filosofem" ("Philosofem") album: this album contains the first real
Burzum track, titled "Dunkelheit" on the album (but the real title of the track is "Burzum". "Dunkelheit" is just the German translation of Burzum"), that I originally wanted to include on the "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss" album (but the recording was very poor, so I didn't use it). I changed the name to Burzum from Uruk-Hai when I made this song (I think in August 1991). The album is a bit weird, and far from perfect, but it is okay. Unfortunately (?), this is the album that sounds the most like the new Burzum music."

Good luck man, kinda in the same situation here :-)

My dad only likes 'old' sinatra music and stuff and aint intrested in my metal songs but my mom doesn't mind when I turn on Dio/Maiden or even Black Sabbath in the car,she loves to hear abit of Pagan too :-D

Yea,my parents are religious but it's not like they go to church and stuff.
My mom has problems understanding the 'harsh' names of metal bands and why there's always a skull lurking in one of the album covers :-P

I do not try to get my parents into metal or force it on anyone.

My mother likes.

Opeth
Amorphis ~ eclipse,silent waters.
Katatonia
Shape Of Despair
My Dying Bride
Rapture
Anathema
Evoken
Alice In Chains
Paradise Lost
Type O Negative

that's about it

My dad does not like metal period and he's really into 60's,70's and i'm pretty sure he has always had a problem with what I listen too and always tried getting me into 70's music. I only really like Zed Zeppelin and Sabbath and he does not like LZ.

My sister and her friends really like a lot of music I like.

My mum likes Opeth's Face of Melinda, but that's about it. My dad likes Sirenia's cover of Leonard Cohen's 'First We Take Manhatten' (though I think only because he likes Leonard Cohen). He described Burzum as 'ridiculous'. :p

Both my parents have been fine with everything I play, and usually let me handle the music in the car whenever we got out to eat or something. My mom was a bit into metal back in the day, listening to black sabbath and iron maiden. My dad wasn't but he's been really getting into metal when I showed him some of it.

Good call on Face of Melinda Zeph. I should play that for my mother because she seemed to like "Windowpane" and other tracks off of Damnation as well as my father.
I should play Witchcraft for my father because he loves old Sabbath.

Wow...

Why do feel you need to justify your musical tastes?

If your parents would think less of you for you musical preferences then they fucking suck. Or maybe you suck for thinking they would. This whole situation seems so stupid to me.

I don't think my parents like any metal, the closest thing my Mom liked was System of a Down so I guess the only type of metal they may like may be Black N Roll like later Satyricon and Carpathian Forest, I don't know tohugh, both of them couldn't stomach the anti-Christian sentiments. I played some of Satyricon's Now, Diabolical with my sister in the car and she told my Dad "He's making me listen to Devil Worship music in the car"

Hahaha, yeah, especially the beginning. :) She'd come tot he conclusion black metal is Evil Satanic Music, oh wait, I'm sure she already thinks that. It's weird though, me and her are going in opposite directions, she's reading her Bible everyday praying before every meal and becoming more religious, I'm not sure why but I asked her "Why do you believe in God?" She basically said "Because I don't want to go to Hell" so maybe fear is her motviating factor, I dont know, it pisses me off how she'll try to get everyone in the house to stop using profanity.

I would rather have picked songs that I love the most and represent my taste the most, without trying to appeal to their taste.

I wouldn't go for the synth/orchestral angle even if your dad likes classical because although it may sound good in context of a fan of metal music, if you approach it from the point of view of someone who hasn't heard it before it just sounds tacky. I think you'd be better off just selecting things that are easy on the ears, the kind of stuff you listened to when you first got into metal.

My mom doesn't really care about my metal listening, but my dad is rather active in it. He's mostly in metalcore/thrash/death stuff like Suicide Silence, the Faceless, Lamb of God, Vader, Morbid Angel, etc. and is actually more well-informed about current events in the metal world than I am, being that he frequents Metal Underground and often borrows my CDs without my consent. He has also been at every metal concert I've been to (being that I am without a vehicle and he is the only one willing to take me).

Yeah, my dad is pretty much the same way. My mom likes shit pop songs and Broadway musicals. I only have a problem with it when she forces it on me.

Thankfully, my parents honestly don't give a damn what I listen to so long as I don't play it too loudly. I stick with my death/black metal, they stick with their Kate Rusby and Richard Thompson.

The only metal band my parents ever liked was Metallica.(select songs, especially Call of Ktulu,The Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters, predictably.) Aside from that, my mom liked one Ved Buens Ende song(Autumn Leaves) and one Windham Hell instrumental(Alpinia) both of which I once copied to her MP3 player.
