METAL FOUNDRY SDX - New metal expansion for superior

Jocke, did you do your KSE clip with the AxeFX? Sounds like it :D A tuning?

Gibson LP baritone with Lundgren M6 in drop A. Boosted 5150 model with one of Splat88's old SM57 IR's, I think (don't remember exactly).

I think that the "AxeFX" sound is more a "Jocke Skog" sound to be honest. I know that more of those demos are made with an AFX but the character is different, so... ;) When you guys say that the AxeFX sucks, it's actually my sound you hate, hahaha!

Not many people have the AxeFX so the few people who post clips seem to determine the perception of its capabilities. I think it has unfairly developed a reputation of "it can only do djent" because of this.

Yeah I can't say the demos are worth anything to me, however I've never been impressed with ToonTrack's demos, user submitted or from TT themselves. But, Jeff (DSS3) has gotten killer drum sounds with 2.0 so my advice to everyone is to not go by the demos on the TT page. No disrespect to TT but they really don't put the best demos up, I'm sorry.

Hell, I'm still using the Drumkit From Hell Superior I bought back in '04. Makes me wish I had bought Superior Custom and Vintage when it came out.

But anywho, the demos really don't sound too bad.

Not trying to prove you wrong, more of a curiosity - wasn't DFHS Toontrack?

Also, what exactly do you mean SSD "has it on purpose"?

Yeah, but DFHS has this quality where you can hear it a mile away
And I say SSD drums have a Steven Slate sound "on purpose" you're getting a professional engineer's drum sounds on a disk. Not knocking slate, cos he's got motherfucking production chops as we all know, and i gotta lot of respect for the guy, the sound of his stuff just isnt personally what im going for *shrug*

Lots of people seem to focus in the kick drums here, and their lack of low-end. I agree that they are a bit on the thin side, but the cymbals, toms and snares sound fantastic imo.
I'm definitely getting this as soon as I can afford to.

I'm still happy with the original DFHS. I know I haven't even come close to squeezing out it's full potential, so it will probably be a while before I upgrade to anything else. I'd love to get my hands on some Slate samples or Superior 2.0, but given my financial situation, I think DFHS will be with me for quite some time, and I don't really have any problems with that. I have yet to personally reach it's limitations.

I haven't really found the kicks to be lacking low end, either. It's all in what you do with them I guess. But then I hate super low end boomy kicks, so maybe why thats why they work for me.

the sound is good IMHO. the price seems to be ok too, the only thing
i am fucked about is that i have to own S2 if i want to use this.
they should have made a single independent product out of this.

what do you guys think?
i tested S2, didn't like it really, i think it is complicated to use.

I can't agree with that because I LOVE S2.0, and this will make it that much more powerful. I love that Solo exists so I can use it without loading Cubase if I wanna jam on my TD3, I love the drums, the cymbals, the X-Drums. I love that it's fully compatible with DFHS, EZDrummer, any EZX, S2.0 NY Vol1, S2.0 NY Vol2, and now, the Metal Foundry. I only own EZDrummer and S2.0 NY Vol1 and Vol2, but I've never been able to NOT get the sounds I want out of those libraries. I'm stoked for this, man.

Superior 1.0's kick drums are pretty good actually, it's the ones in Superior 2.0 that lack low end, and I've found it's pretty hard to dial some into them convincingly.

I still think 1.0 IS superior

I think you may be right here, I might have to dig out my disks for Superior 1.0 and give it a go again with the 2.0 interface.

Ultimately, I am going to reserve judgement. But I've always found the Toontrack stuff to really lack that bite that I get from the Platinum Samples packs. Of course, I use BFD2 a lot. But to be honest, I don't really use the stock kits - a bit too loose and pop-rock orientated for me. But I love the Evil Joe Baressi pack, and lately I've really been digging the Andy Johns pack too.

I find that the layering possibilities that BFD2 offers me to be really useful; I can throw in Joes glamoflage kick, along with a more low-end kick from the Andy Johns pack, and get my perfect blend betwixt the two.

Can you do that with Superior 2.0? I've got it, but not installed it yet. If you CAN do that, I reckon you could probably get a very full kick sound by layering two or even three together.

Yeah you can layer drums in Superior 2.0, just add an x-pad or whatever they call it.

Yup. You could also bounce several kits and simply import the audio tracks you'd like to blend. A little less taxing on the comp. Especially if you add the toontrack plugins and use a lot of bleed. At least it has been in my case

And does Superior have its own reverb built into the box?

I'll install it a bit later on; I just got back from a recording session. Bit knackered now.

Superior 2.0 has three degrees of ambient mics that you can control levels and bleed levels with. It's not an effect, it's the real room reverb. If that's not enough, there are free Bricasti impulses out there now. I'm set.
